Please enlighten me fans, via old boxers vs new fighters....I favor any era that has the most boxers competing and boxing MOST FREQUENTLY against the DEEPEST POOL of talent....For example-During my favorite era,in the 1940s,as a youth there were in the NYC area, all these clubs operating combined 6 days of the week.as follows
    MSG
    ST.NICHOLAS ARENA
    RIDGEWOOD GROVE
    CONEY ISLAND VELEDROME
    QUUENSBORO ARENA
    SUNNYSIDE ARENA
    DEXTER PARK
FORT HAMILTON ARENA, and more...Fighters fought two or three times as often, developing there respective skills, against better and better opposition, learning only by experience, and hopefully improving their skills...To get to the mecca of boximg MSG,for a main event,I would say the average main eventer had about 50 to 70 bouts...Boxers then had a plethora of FULL TIME trainers such as Arcel.Bimstein,Brown.Charlie Goldman,Chickie Ferrara, and a host of great trainers, plying their trade six days a week,in the NY area alone...These conditions weeded out the good from the great, allowing such boxers as PeP, Ike Williams,Robinson,Gavilan,Lamotta,Zale, Charles,Moore,Saddler,Beau Jack etc and so mnany many more in that great decade of the 1940s...A great number of fighters fighting most often, the BEST opponents equals for the MOST part better calibre fighters...Common sense dictates that....Where am I wrong?

bb raises a very good point: competition breads excellence. the politics of today mean the best don't fight the best and don't fight nearly often enough. without fear of having your career tank because of one loss you were allowed to sharpen your skills in the ring. fighters today would be well served with this type of experience and many modern fighters could be remembered as ATG if given this opportunity

Don't care much for math. The conclusion is always the same. The only real varabile is if one boxer has a size advantage that he knows how to use.

I fell confident that Benny Leonard and Prenell Whitaker would beat Roberto Duran. Leonard fought before Duran and Whitaker fought after Duran's best days. They are both better boxers than Duran. It has nothing to do with there eras.
