Ali and Tyson are still world renowned, Dempsey in some way remains immortalized even compared to his contemporaries likely due to Tyson’s open admiration of him and the Ippo anime’s popularity. John L. Sullivan immortalized the “guy with handlebar moustache and fighting pose” stance into pop culture despite it existing beforehand. Who else?

Joe Louis and Ray Robinson. Louis for the implications of the second Schmeling fight and Robinson whenever pfp discussions come up.

It’s an interesting one in terms of future and how current fighters or recent ones will be remembered.
We still have records of Roman gladiators, I wonder how many boxing forums will refer to the great Duran or the savant Locche in 2000 years ?

    Foreman

A boxing manga that started in the 1990s and is still ongoing, eventually got made into an anime. Real life boxers are occasionally referenced (the main character wears a Tatsuyoshi shirt in a panel once for example). Dempsey is the most frequently mentioned old timer in it as the main character eventually picks up the "Dempsey roll" as a strategy. and its probably the main reason any non-boxing fan knows who he is.

It's probably a top 5 sports manga/anime of all time but I don't think that it's so good that it escapes its genre/medium if that makes sense. I personally really enjoyed it but I wouldn't recommend it to someone who doesn't already like sports manga or anime.

People still idolise Tyson. Even before the Jake Paul fight there would be 10 second clips of him belting the pads and casuals (including Joe Rogan) would be posting how awesome and amazing he looked and predicting him to decapitate Paul when in reality he’s a broken down old man who didn’t look any good against a shot to pieces shell of RJJ in a sparring match years before. That’s all because he’s maintained his legend and hold on the public imagination whether rightly or wrongly.

Ali because he’s an icon not just of boxing.

Foreman for the grill, marketing and the comeback.

SRL, Hagler, Duran and Hearns are still pretty well known by most males above 40 I reckon because they defined an era and were all superstars

Sugar Ray Robinson not mentioned yet I'm surprised.
Old foe Jake La Motta is renowned simply because of Oscar winning Raging Bull, iconic film.
