Usyk is now 38 and he is considered by many as #1 p4p boxer in the world. I know Floyd was 38 when he fought Berto. Crawford is 37 now and is another man to be considered as possible p4p #1. Do you know other examples when boxers in their late 30s or early 40s were considered at the best p4p?
Erislandy Lara is 41 but is still at the top of his game. Hell, Rigo might well have been in his late 30s or 40s when he was being touted as a P4P talent depending on how old he really is. Sonny Liston as well was one of the top pugilists in the world even well into 30s (or possibly 40s depending on who you ask). GGG was still beating top MWs even on the verge of 40. Sergio Martinez did too. Pacquiao beat Thurman at 40. J. J. Walcott only really found success at the top level while well into his 30s and pushed Marciano hard while in his 40s.
If p4p rankings were available at the time, Archie Moore may well have been the number #1 somewhere around the mid 1950's when he'd have been in his early 40's.
I think the OP is trying to establish the oldest boxer to be considered #1 p4p at that time, rather than merely boxers doing well at that age. As per my previous post, Archie Moore around the mid 1950's in his early 40's is likely the oldest ever boxer who would be considered the best p4p on the planet at that time.
Hi Guys. Could Fitz, at some stage maybe after beating Dempsey, or Corbett be in the running ? stay safe fellow posters.
