Oleg Maskaev v Chris Arreola

Last time I saw Maskaev fight, he looked like his feet were in concrete, and he was throwing punches underwater.

As somebody else said, even at his best he was a notch below the top guys.

If he wins this, Arreola really should retire out of shame.

 

agree with sandman. maskaev never had it except too much, fights with chin and generally shot now. arreola by ko/tko within 6 rounds. if maskaev drags him to a 12 ud, i will be surprised somewhat but still believe it. maskaev by knockout is unlikely..

 

Maskaev is not a contender anymore. I hope he's not going to become a punching bag for up and coming guys.

If Arreola can't beat Maskaev at this point in Maskaev's career, then Arreola is not going anywhere. Sounds like they want him to have a known name on hisrecord in order to give him some more recognition and credibility. I don't think his people would match him with Maskaev if they were not sure it was an easy win.

 

I agree. It's pretty much a Wlad v Mercer type matchup for me.

Young up and comer against a 'name', with not a lot left. Just enough to stand up for a few rounds, and gain some attention for the winning young guy.

 

Maskaev has a messed up back. He is not the same as he used to be, but he can still punch.

 

Americans won't watch this farce. Nobody wants to see a shot and undeserving Russian take on Arreola. Goossen has let the fans down big time. My only hope is that HBO reffuses to televise this farve but it won't happen anyway.

 

In old days boxers were underpaid and screwed over by promoters, so many had to fight when they were way past best. I know it still happens a bit today, but not as bad as old days. Maskaev had some good paydays, I wonder why he doesn't retire. Maybe he still wants to prove self, or does he need money?

I heard that Maskaev is very smart with his money and has invested well. Anybody hear similar? Imo, he is just looking for one last big payday to call it a career. He was hoping it would be against Vitali for more money, but that didn't work out for him.

 

In a way, I agree. But Maskaev was never a big name in the sport. Guys like Briggs or Toney have bigger names and are more marketable than the Russian. From a boxing fan's perspective, the matchup does not make sense anyway.

 

Rappaport did help him invest his money but it was mostly real estate which is in the shitter right now but the good news is it will eventually come back around.

Maskaev is just wanting one last payday an extra 2 or 3 million will go a long way in retirement but he is not going to make that against Arreola but he would have against Vitali Klitschko and it is why he wanted the fight so bad.

Oleg is a likable guy and I don't want to see him get hurt in the ring he is a shot fighter.

Not good but the guy has a bad back and a screwed up right elbow. Like someone said in his last few fights it looked like he was fighting in quick sand and his punches look like he was punching under water.

He is shot. The sad thing is his early career was HORRIBLY managed he was put in there with people he had no business fighting so early in his career. Had he been with a shrewd guy like Dennis Rappaport from the beginning he would have had a much better career he had skills and was/is a tough guy.
