Not 100% on the scores by the way. That's what I thought I heard, but defo a Maskaev UD. Edit: just checked Twitter and others have posted the same scores. General consensus on here and on there is that Maskaev took that by 1-3 rounds. A few (inc. me) had it a draw and no-one had it a Gavern win.
I'm telling you, this fight would sell. Let me be Wlad's speech writer. "Oleg is very dangerous opponent. He once beat my brasa in ze amateurs. It will not be easy fight."
He was a solid top 50 fighter in his prime. Wouldn't be fit to spar with the Klitschkos now though. Still, he holds less than Wlad does. :hi:
Also I bet Oleg already had some serious diseases ao Wladimir can make a good story about that. :yep:hey
Finally caught up... Round 1 Maskaev puts out the jab at intervals, mostly plodding around in circles as Gavern darts in with body jabs. Maskaev rallies in the final half minute, putting Gavern on the ropes with a series of 1-2s. Gavern tries leaning in against Maskaev and gets clipped high on the head with Maskaev's hooks, ponderous but swatted in multiples over the back of Gavern's right glove. Gavern thumps his chest in bravado under fire. 10-9 Maskaev but close 30-27 Maskaev Round 4 Maskaev is bulldozing in with his jab held out frozen straight, walking into hook and right hand combos delivered from outside as Gavern sets himself for ambush. Maskaev walks Gavern into the ropes but can't do anything with him but lay on him. Gavern keeps grabbing at Maskaev's body to nullify his offense as he steps in without punching. Several jabs into the air by Maskaev stepping in. Gavern puts out some odd jabs, an opening the saloon door motion with his left arm up in the air only moving from past the elbow to sweep outward almost backhanded. Maskaev rushes in to muscle Gavern to the ropes, getting caught by jabs and rights as Gavern pulls some James Toney moves and shockingly gets away with them. Gavern looks at the TV camera on the ring apron and shouts "WHOO!" as he catches Maskaev barging into him for a clinch by the ropes. 10-9 Maskaev 59-55 Maskaev Round 7 Maskaev is pushing Gavern to the ropes. Gavern backhands some jabs out and then leans back, hanging himself over an invisibly laundry line to let his head dangle under Maskaev's typical firing path. Gavern lands a clubbing right hand past a jab as Maskaev ducks in front of him. The referee abruptly deducts a point from Gavern, inexplicably, with no prior warnings and with it having been sort of a grey area with Maskaev providing a descending target - definitely not an intentional rabbit punch. They clinch and Maskaev actually lands more blatant rabbit punches than what Gavern was penalized for earlier. Frequent pushes apart by the ref. 9-9 Gavern 78-73 Maskaev Round 9 Gavern emerges from his corner yelling at Maskaev, still on his stool being attended with bags of ice, glaring up from a furrowed brow at his opponent wearily. Gavern is eager to fight; Maskaev would rather a nap. 1-2s by Maskaev coming in to meet Gavern, all slipped. Gavern pigeons his neck bending over, slipping a series of 1-2s thrown with apparent disinterest by Maskaev, who inhales deeply through his mouth, wheezing after each cluster of misses and leaning down on Gavern. Hooks by Maskaev. Right hand up from a crouch by Gavern. 10-9 Gavern although Maskaev came on strong late. (most of it was sound & fury signifying nothing, however - he was exhausted throwing arm punches and Gavern was caught flush by some of them only because he was as exhausted; not really hurt by them) 95-93 Maskaev I watched not yet knowing the result or having read anyone's scores.
How did this go the distance? It signifies how pathetic both Maskaev and Gavern have become offensively that neither could stop the other, considering each has more than enough power to get the job done on paper. (Gavern with moderate pop, more than needed to crack Maskaev's glass...and Maskaev with monstrous power, more than needed to waste Gavern who is more durable than Maskaev but still a bit shaky) It's probably for the best I never made a vBookie event, or it would have been a heavy loss for all on the Under.
