Despite the fact that Peter had success against a hungry fighter in James Toney, I have to agree with your assessment. I think Peter will underprepare, swing wildly, and lose a UD.
I voted for Peter, but Oleg has surprised before, and quite frankly, Peter isn't all that.Yeah, big puncher, but except for the three knockdowns against the chinless Klitchko, and two decisions over obese middleweight Toney, Sam has hardly set the world on fire.It is concieveable that Maskaev could shut down big Sam with the jab.
Peter by KO. Oleg has a strong punch himself, but Peter has a granite chin and Oleg has one of the worse chins in the HW division. If Maskaev can avoid getting hit in the back of the head, or if the ref actually deducts points from Peter for doing it (it hasn't happened to him in the past), then Maskaev stands a shot at winning, but I suspect this one ends up with Maskaev's trainer breaking poppers under Maskaev's nose.
Peter is going to ANNIHILATE glass-jawed Oleg, and EARLY. This is a guy who was starched by light-hitting Kirk Johnson, arm-punching Lance Whitaker, and the thoroughly mediocre journeyman Corey "T-Rex" Sanders. atsch Peter is going to walk right through Maskaev, tap him on the china chin, and it will all be over - QUICKLY!! Peter KO 1
There has been growing and stong support for Maskaev here over the months though, which means it should make for a great atmosphere in ESB come fight night...which is great!
Here are my thoughts: Oleg has a Glass Jaw, that has been established in the past as a fact. Oleg is also a timid/slow starter in fights. Watch the first 2 rounds of the 2nd Rahman fight for an example of this. Peter will catch Oleg with one of his clubbing punches early in the fight. Oleg could use movement but I think he will try and slug and get caught around the 5th round or so. Oleg can win a UD, but I do not think he will last the fight before getting caught first with a huge punch.
:rofl:rofl:rofl:rofl:rofl:rofl Chins don't get BETTER with age, they get WORSE. And in Peter, Oleg is facing the most powerful puncher he's probably EVER gone up against. He will be dispatched EARLY, very early.
First few rounds I anticipate Maskaev doing an impression of Ruiz and hugging a lot, whilst Peter will come in like a King Kong swinging wildly, mostly into thin air. If Maskaev weathers the storm, and I suspect he will, he will start taking over the fight and land regularly as Peter's defence consists of blocking punches with his head. I do not think Peter will have a plan B, he will keep in swinging and will tire out and then his head will become a punching bag.
He hasn't gotten knocked down in 5 years because he has faced a string of tomato cans and journeymen en route to fighting Hasim Rahman again. Mind you, Rahman being a guy who is tailor made for Maskaev (slow, questionable chin, bad stamina). Sam Peter will be the first guy Maskaev fights who is actually fast enough and strong enough to give him problems in well over 5 years. And Sam Peter is nearly impossible to hurt. He had the biggest guy in the division banging on him over 12 rounds with flush right hands and left hooks. Only once in the 12th was he hurt. You have to keep in mind that many guys have paid the price of Sam Peter's power including James Toney, who by the way still got knocked down and nearly out in the rematch. Maskaev is a stiff in the ring who relys on a strong jab to keep opponents off of him. He has virtually no head movement, and no foot movement. He's like a smaller compact version of Andrew Golota. There is absolutely no way Sam Peter misses this guy. And we all know when Sam Peter connects flush it's goodnight.
