I have not seen Usky yet, but keep in mind he is only 21. At 63 he has room to add on some muscle without adding fat. Remember Ibragimov and Chagaev both competed at heavyweight in the Olympics, but grew into 220 pound + heavyweights. Most amatuer heavies ( 91K ) drop a few pounds to make weight, then re-hydrate like they do in the pro's.
Despite his lack of offensive variety and his defensive lapses, Wilder was quite impressive when he would get the 1-2 going from the right distance. The punches were straight and they were delivered with excellent power. All he has to do in order to bronze is to win his next fight against a rather unheralded Moroccan. Yes, he will probably lose to either Usyk or Russo in the semi-final bout, but that still gets him a medal.
That has nothing to do with it. To some people it is confusing and against their view of the world that the good big boxers are not black americans. That is why you get a "pudgy russian" response. Olexander could be better than Ali and Tyson combined and to some people he would still be a pudgy russion. Blacks Americans have managed to physically intimidate whites (I just came back from the US today) to the extent that many white americans have an inferiority complex towards blacks. This is why white Americans will probably never be any good in the bigger divisions - because they are defeated mentally before they even enter the ring. These same white fans use this same inferiority complex to judge European boxers and therefore cannot understand how they can win and certainly cannot believe they can be any good. If they win it must be because the good blacks are busy doing something else - such as basket or football. It just has to be. The Russians on the other hand all are into boxing - and football, handball and a gazzilion other sports are not far bigger than boxing in Russia... So - pudgy Russian - has nothing to do with seeing the fighter first or not. It is just the logical consequence of a warped view of the world.
True, but he was a middleweight until recentely and he doesn't carry the weight THAT well: his power isn't much and his stamina is not really stellar. Given his speedy style, I think he should minimize the amount of weight he puts on. A 210-215 heavyweight with his style and good stamina could be a very fearsome prospect. I hadn't seen Usyk before the Olympics, but he was highly touted beforehand. A lot of people who pay more attention to amateur boxing than I do have a feeling he could go for gold. Back in the old days, a boxer of his youth and talent could entertain the dream of four gold medals at heavyweight, beating the record. However, he will likely go pro soon if he does well. Note- what is Roman Greenburg doing these days? I remember he was being talked about as a prospect four or five years ago. You are the last person I remember talking about him. Did he suffer an upset loss or something?
Fighters grow. Usyk is 21. He could have had a late growth spurt. Ali was but a light heavy in the 1960 Olympic games. Holyfield was also a light heavy. I tend to think Usky can be a trim 220 pounds. I heard Usky was a talent, but I was not sure if his power would be good at 91K. Greenberg was hyped, but he's not that good. A bit lethargic in the ring, and he's too pumped up and stiff. Entering the game he was trim and fast.
White Americans do fine in MMA sport. Here is the point to focus on. You would be hard pressed to find a good boxing gym where many whites live. However there are plenty of MMA gyms. Having said that, you post has some points. USA heavyweight boxing is at such a low point these days. The future looks bleak. In truth, the tables have turned. It is now the Eastern Euro guy who enters the ring thinking he will win, and the American black guy who seems to be intimidated.
I heard he got utterly demolished by Matvey Korobov a couple of years ago, no shame in that though, who doesn't get blown out by Korobov. From what I've seen Usyk is a damn good fighter, nice footwork, quick, good defence, he could really turn into a quality pro. He's only young and still growing aswell, he could improve even more over the next few years.
I think that you have badly misunderstood something: The ones giving the "pudgy Russian" responses ARE a tiny minority of black Americans. I, like most Americans or any color, like black American fighters, white American fighters, Eastern Euros, Western Euros, the Afriacans, Mexicans, Philipinos, Puerto Ricans, and anyone else who puts on good fights. This kind of repsonse does not even represent most black Americans. We just have a few Rahmen-type fans who want to turn this into a hood thing.
We will have to see. 220 lbs could be a good weight, but I wouldn't want to see someone with Oleksandr's frame try to carry much more weight than that.
