Best to evaluate a fighter after he has retired.

I think Usyk would totally befuddle him and have him eating jabs all night. I also wouldn't be surprised to see Louis rocked by something coming back from Usyk, maybe even dropped, though I can see him lasting to the final bell.

Louis vs Gassiev is a better fight, IMO.

having a good chin and getting past Joe Louis type power combination are 2 different things. Louis could also go to the body real well. I think Usyk is talented and has great potential but nothing on his record would convince me that he could get past the greatest heavyweight champion JOE LOUIS at least not at this time. I want to see Usyk Bellow, then one of the big boys and if he gets that far, one of the Champions

Plus, Louis cracked many durable chins in his time.

You can see Louis lasting to the last bell or Usyk lasting to the last bell?

I know that, out of "historical respect", we're supposed to pick Louis - who, after all, is generally considered one of the two best heavyweights ever.

However, as much as I admire The Brown Bomber, I feel Usyk has all the right tools to beat him. He's far bigger, stronger and harder hitting than Conn - but just as fast! Not only with his hands, but he's very mobile and can slip out of harm's way very quickly, if he senses danger. He fought at a very high pace against Gassiev for 12 rounds, and would likely have no problem with the 15-rounds distance, if that should be required.

A ko win for Louis certainly can't be ruled out, but more likely Usyk would keep a long southpaw jab in his face all night, on the way to a clear points win.

Ok, I realise the danger of making predictions like this, involving a still active boxer (still plenty of time for him to disappoint us) - but from what I've seen so far, I'm very impressed!

Usyk can certainly make Louis look silly but unlike Murat Gassiev , Louis knows how to cut the ring off and how to effectively stalk an opponent.
Gassiev also didn't know what a jab was and Joe has one of the all time great jabs. His great left hook could be a dangerous tool against Usyks southpaw stance too.
Its more likely Louis gets to Usyk like he got to slick awkward mover Bob Pastor , more than its likely Usyk outboxes Louis like he did against an amateur looking Gassiev.

I agree, it would be best to wait and see. But I also think he's outbox Louis based on what we have seen out of Usky as a professional.

:DIt’s based on his a full amateur career at heavyweight, taking hard punches, and his pro career taking punches.

Conn is a smaller guy, who aside from Joe Louis didn't face any good heavyweight punchers.

If you think Conn took a better punch than Usyk, you probably think small light heavies or super middles also take better punches than bigger men weighting 200+ pounds.

I think that Conn was stopped twice (aside from an early career quit job) by punches, and they were punches from one of the great, great pound-for-pound punchers and that he was smaller than that man.

THAT is the single, the only, the entirety of your measurement for Conn's chin - you have NOTHING but these two stoppages to judge him by.

Nevetheless, you don't deem Usyk's chin equal - no - you dont' deem Usyk's chin slightly better - no - you deem Usyk's chin much better than Billy Conn's, much better.

Take a moment - ask yourself: do I want to just admit I got a bit overexcited here and retract that? Here's your chance.

Or he's have been conscripted into the Soviet army to stop panzers with a rifle and a bottle of paraffin.

This going back to 1942 is a bad idea for Usyk.

I feel that this is the correct answer.

I rate Usyk very highly and I think he's shown us enough to be able to draw the conclusion that he'd be competitive with Louis. But I want to see more before I pick him over an ATG with the attributes that Louis had.

Perhaps Usyk would be competitive with Abe Simon????
