But he's chosen to move up to HW rather than stay at CW. That's either because he thinks he can beat bigger men or earn more money fighting them. But neither of these possibilities supports the view he 'clearly prefers to be the bigger man in the ring'.

 

Fedosov and Spong aren't exactly bigger. In fact, they're smaller than him - in height and reach.

 

Not a bad fight, since Usyk is coming off an injury and most likely wants to see how is bicep is responding before jumping in with top competition at heavyweight.

 

Haven't you said many times how Wilder is beating bigger guys than him when he also always has greater height and reach?

 

We don't know what he will weigh. The point is, criticising a fighter for his ambitions towards a division in which he is yet to compete, makes no sense to me. He's moved up from a division where he was almost certain to be a bigger guy into one where the odds are he won't be, and considering he will have a number of fights at HW in all likelihood, you can't make a fair assessment based on who he might fight in his first; if that was your goal of course. You jumped the gun.

He was the Olympic Heavyweight Gold Medalist in 2012. He's spent the better part of the past six years picking on smaller opponents. He'll be 33 in January.

He should've turned pro at heavyweight when he was 25 but, for whatever reason, maybe he tasted the power of real heavyweights in the WSB and decided he didn't want any part of it, he decided to take on smaller guys.

Now that he's "making the leap" ... he's fighting the smallest heavys he can find.

I think Usyk is a fine fighter.

But, clearly, he (Usyk) has doubts about winning a heavyweight title as a pro or he would've began pursuing it seven years ago.

Then again, Andy Ruiz wasn't a beltholder seven years ago.

 

It's his seventh pro fight at heavyweight, if you count the PAID fights he had in the WSB and the Mendoza fight.

And champions from smaller weights move up all the time. Most fight for the title immediately when they move up.

The WBO is ready to make him the mandatory heavyweight contender regardless of who he fights. The sport and his promoter are pushing him to GET A MOVE ON.

The clock's ticking. The last thing to go for a slugger is his punch. Boxers, like Usyk, don't last as long.

Does he want to be heavyweight champion or not?

He should be fighting the former WBO champ Parker, not Fedosov or Spong.

 

Moving up from cruiserweight to heavyweight is different than every other weight class. We aren’t talking about moving up 4 or 5 lbs here. He could be fighting someone that weighs 60 lbs more than his last opponent. I don’t see anything wrong with him taking a tuneup fight before jumping into deep waters. If he’s still fighting guys like this 3 or 4 fights from now, then perhaps my opinion would change.
