Olivares or Jofre - Who...

Jofre..Better all around at the weight and by taking into consideration Olivares partyboy antics you are being completely unfair to all the other fighters that didnt go down this path, so I dont do that at all when ranking them.

Eder beats him H2H also, which gives him a clear edge in the end. Olivares has some big wins at 118, possibly even bigger man for man then Jofre with his destruction of Rose, Rudkin and his 2 wins over Castillo among others. But I think Eder probably edges him out with his is consistency in the resume department.

As I stated before I think Eder beats Ruben and that takes him from just ahead, probably even close enough to interchange them, to clearly ahead.

 

I side with McGrain, though I typically give the edge to Jofre based on his consistency in comparison to Olivares, whose out of ring lifestyle cost him in certain portions of his career. At their best, not sure who to favor given the limited footage of Jofre, the only film of him at his true best being against Medel (though it is some very impressive and telling footage). I can't say it was more impressive than the best I've seen of Olivares though, such as his bout with Lionel Rose. That may well be the most impressive performance I've ever seen from any of the Mexican greats.

 

I normally credit Jofre with being just above Olivares atg at the weight, but ive started to forget about all that atg ranking stuff in recent times, as its just not as black and white as that to me anymore. Jofre's consistency WAS special though, whereas i reckon he was likely the best bantam ever h2h, Olivares on his best night lays claim to this label also. Olivares fought in some era also, underrated if i do say so myself. Jofre has top wins also. Very hard to say, if im forced i'll pick Jofre for his record.

This is a very tough one to pick both look excellent at there best Medal and Rose respectively. If I had to choose maybe Olivares slightly but this is as close as a 50/50 for me.

 

Olivares had 1 of the most incredible peaks in history IMO, especially among lower weight fighters. He had the kind of two-fisted ferocity & firepower that could simply overwhelm most opponents in his weight range (like a pocket version of Tyson or young Foreman), but he also had versatility & resilience to fall back on during the rare instances when power alone wasn't enough. He bombed out a very accomplished, unbeaten champion to win the BW title & then did the same to iron-chinned perennial contender Rudkin, who had previously taken the best that Rose & Harada could throw @him for a full 15 rounds each.

Much is made of his supposed "inconsistency" & lack of longevity, but he only lost once in his 1st 70ish fights over 7 years, & that lone loss came when his head was split open by a visible head clash in the very 1st round & he fought through 14 rounds w/ blood impairing his vision until it finally compelled a stoppage. (Nowadays, that fight would probably be stopped straightaway & ruled a NC.) IMO, that kind of a streak actually makes him 1 of the most consistent fighters in history while @ his peak. When he finally lost his BW title for good vs. Herrera, he was utterly depleted from making weight after showing visible wear & tear in his last couple of title defenses (much like Saad Muhammad when he lost his title to Qawi). He didn't become genuinely inconsistent until after that fight + his move up to FW.

 

It’s Eder for me, Eder is one of the best fighters I’ve ever seen you won’t learn a mistake watching “The Golden Bantam” Olivares is genuinely great but I think Eder is on the top shelf beside fellow immortals like Willie Pep. Who wins H2H? I don’t know.

 

His destruction of Rose… man, watching both those guys without having seen that fight you’d think Rose could’ve won at least in my judgement but he was absolutely crunched. Rockin Ruben was hell to fight.
