Olivares vs Chavez, Who was Better and/or Greater?

I agree. Rudkin did have a case for beating Rose though.

 

In my card Harada won 9 rounds (with knockdown). I think first Jofre fight was closer

Chavez. Olivares was more "splashy" with his feats and perhaps the more dynamic of the two and he lived and died by the sword, but he "died" too often, even as a bantam, to be considered mexico's greatest fighter. Can't see that at all. Excellent technician too, but Chavez was tougher, more precise, better disciplined and far more consistent.

 

Takao Sakurai had a case for beating Rose. He was a hell of a little fighter.

 

Chavez was more solid and consistent. Olivares more exciting and eye catching but more vulnerable. Olivares has the better wins but as an overall package Chavez has the better career. More steady and consistent which really mirrors their respective styles.

I think they are the top two from Mexico.

Sanchez and Marquez probably 3 & 4. Saldivar and Zarate probably 5 & 6. Barrera IMO is the best of the rest and is probably 7 (though I think Finito was a better fighter) then you’ve got Morales, Lopez and Canto rounding off the top 10 in no particular order.

 

Chavez was better and greater.

Chavez by a handsome margin in my opinion. I think Olivares, great though he unquestionably was, tends to get a touch overrated and let off a little too easily for some of his defeats. Magnificent fighter all the same, mind you, just not as great as Chavez.

 

Chavez was greater. Who looked better on film is debatable.

 

Julio Caesar Chavez was more popular, he had longevity on his side plus he did have more important wins in big fights than big losses than Ruben Olivares. Although Ruben was a very big hitter, he did lose the bigger fights, becoming a stepping stone for a great like Alexis Arguello, who kayoed him on Nov 23 1974, to win the WBA Featherweight Title.
