McCall's reputation is a cinder block of a man who could not be hurt. After watching the Seldon vs McCall fight, I am here to report its not entirely true. Seldon had MCCall hurt and holding on in round 5, and rocked him in round 6. Announcer Al Bernstein mentioned that Buster Doguals had McCall in trouble at the end of their fight too.
I have an archived interview with McCall where he said it was Bert Cooper who hit him the hardest. I have not seen Cooper vs McCall.
Seldon throw the absolute kitchen sink at McCall, people forget how much of an exciting brawler he used to be. The losses to McCall and Bowe seemed to change his mindset, he developed a very good jab and became the stick 'n' mover he's known as today. Kind of an inverse Razor Ruddock journey
I saw the seldon fight live on ESPN in 1991. I was 16 years old and had been following Bruce along with the rest of the young hopefuls such as Mercer, Lewis, Bowe, Morrison etc. Seldon was winning most of those rounds until he tired in the 9th and was floored three times to a TKO loss. He hung his head and sobbed for minutes after the loss. Keep in mind when stating that Mccall was hurt against Douglas and Seldon, that he was a young fighter with few bouts and rather unpolished yet.
Eh, pretty much everyone has been wobbled at some stage of his career. In a sport like this, it's unavoidable. McCall's durability is still absolutely remarkable.
He might be stopped now. He is old, shot to ****, ruined by drugs and would be target practice for someone like Wlad. Nobody is inhuman, if he ate constant power shots from Wlad or another big hitter eventually he would go. BUT his chin is the best I have ever seen. Bear in mind that he dropped Tyson in sparring but was never dropped himself, that he has never been floored in his career and the best someone can come up with is "he was hurt in round 5 against Seldon". The guy has taken bombs off Heavyweight fighters and fought some big hitters and never once looked like being stopped.
in the first gomez fight a left hand made him double take and clinch really hard. he has an amazing chin but you cant say that being hurt makes him weak chin...the body isnt supposed to take that much force to the face for 20 years of fighting...he can be stopped but it would take far more energy that is acsessable to just box and move....if he had a bettter jab and didnt walk i think he would be a much better fighter.
McCall has a great chin but that does not mean people don't overrate it. I still believe that Tua has the best chin I have ever seen.
