The only chance Moorer would have had would be to try and outpoint McCall,...and avoid being clocked like Lewis was....don't know if he could have done that though.
Interesting matchup. McCall was often guilty of sleepwalking through fights. If he did, Moorer could outpoint him. (Similar to moorer-Schultz). But, we know Moorer isn't stopping McCall. And, Moorer would always be a punch or two away from blowing it due to his less than sturdy chin. Best vs Best, I think Moorer would squeak out the decision. (But this prediction is based more on the fact that McCall almost always found a way to lose his fights against the elite. He is a perfect example of a fighter with "sparring partner's syndrome")
Moorer should win if he boxes and moves .mcCall sometimes drifted through fights but when he was fired up he was very dangerous .moorer could hit but he wouldn't shift mcCall .this fight depends on what version of the bull shows up.
A very interesting fight, Moorer was hurt often at heavyweight but usually gutted it out, example being his fights vs Stewart and Cooper. He's clearly the more polished boxer here. I'd see him winning on points but being as his punch couldn't bail him out like it did against Cooper and Stewart McCall would be dangerous for the entire fight.. But I still look for Moorer to do enough to get the win.
Great summation Bert. First thought was 'McCall chins him', before rationality took over. Moorer snaps that right jab out often enough and packs enough power to keep McCall off and take a decision win.
I was thinking the same thing, that McCall would have to eventually catch Moorer and end it. Then I remembered the McCall actually lost to Frank Bruno and came to my senses.
McCall was no journeyman, though. He has quite a few good wins: Lewis, Seldon, Maskaev, Akinwande, Oquendo, and Ferguson. The guy was sometimes sluggish, but when he turned it up, he was dangerous and effective.
I like MM here. An if only fight for McCall--if only he had capitalized when he knocked him down or if only he had not missed with so many of his big right hands Moorer has to play it safe, but I sure see a guy like McCall being very confused by a southpaw. He'd get hit all night and would not be able to make adjustments---hardly the Oliver McCall strongsuit; adjustments. Moorer has the faster hands and That incredible accuracy. And he really only has a looping right hand to worry about---a nice short left hook would help the chances for Oliver a ton. But if Moorer is in good shape & not the heavier version we saw later on not moving his legs, he should win going away. The punchstat numbers on this bout would be lopsided, but it'd be one of those bouts where what looks like a dominant performance still required a tightrope act to pull it off.
