How big is the Tyson poster in your room?

There were two variants of Buster Douglas "back in the day". The one that would show-up fat and quit, and the one that had an extraordinary skillset and drive that showed-up in four or five of his fights over the course of his career. On the under card of Tyson's greatest victory the good Douglas mopped the canvas with one of Tyson's chief sparring partners, dropping the guy with jabs and looking MUCH like the fighter that would attack, shellack and disassemble Tyson some eighteen months later in Tokyo.

...and don't hand me any of that "Tyson wasn't in shape" stuff re Tokyo.

    :hi:

In all the interviews I have done on the show I have to say the Oliver McCall was the most honest and open about his entire career and himself and it was really refreshing to listen to someone that did not mind talking about the highs and lows in his career and did not avoid any questions......Oliver McCall is a class act and I'd love to get him back on the show sometime.

Poor Tim Witherspoon's career really stagnated from 1987-1990, didn't it? So much for the myth that Tyson cleared out the division of all conceivable contenders by early 1990.

If he did, no-one ever talked about it. Standing up through all those rounds against Tyson was the beginning of McCall's reputation. If it hadn't been for that, he'd have never been able to get any breaks in boxing, since he was such a high-risk/low-reward opponent.

It's interesting to see the strength disparity in that video. McCall just pushes Tyson around. It's easy to forget how big and strong McCall was, because he was usually facing either giants like Lewis or Akinwande, or "broad" (both around the shoulders and the waist) opponents like Holmes and Bruno. Put McCall in the 1960s or 1970s and he'd be the Atomic Elephant.

Well Spoon was never in the spot where he was the top contender and it's impossible for the champ to beat everybody.

Spoon fought almost no one of note during these years but even so he was taken to split decisions with Larry Alexander and Mike Williams. Tyson beat guys that were better than him/rated higher than him during these years.

I didn't say Tyson ducked him. I'm just saying Tyson never cleared out the division, which is something he is sometimes credited with doing.

He cleaned out the division about as much as one could. There's always a contender or two that gets left out for one reason or another.

Louis didn't fight Ray, or Lem Franklin, Liston didn't fight Ingo, Lewis never had Bowe/Tyson, Marciano never fought Nino Valdes who was rated highly during his reign etc.

The magazines rated Witherspoon, but the sanctioning bodies didn't (because of Don King's influence), so Tyson couldn't have fought Tim even if he'd wanted to. You need to face RANKED contenders on the alphabet lists, and Witherspoon wasn't one.

I agree with Oliver about what he was saying about Buster Douglas, cause even though Tyson did have a lot of issues back before that fight....I think even a focused Tyson would have problems that night cause Buster fought to the best of his abilities and had all the tools to beat Tyson, but some thought lacked the heart and dedication to be a champion....well for one night he was everything he could of been, and its just too bad he could not of done that for his whole career cause we would be thinking of Buster Douglas in a different light now if he had.

I agree that the Douglas who beat Tyson would have beaten most heavyweight champions and would have given a tough fights to anyone who he would not beat.
