Isaac Carbonell Portal vs. Antonio Louis Hernández, 6 rounds @ light heavyweight

 

I've seen Carbonell on three previous episodes of this series at the Nashville Troubadour, headlining Country Box 20 against Cleotis Pendarvis in August, then co-headlining Country Box 22 versus Twon Herbre Smith in September. He's already booked for Country Box 26 next month, with a mild step up facing Kenmon Evans over 8 scheduled rounds.

He's a very relaxed (almost to a fault) and rangy Cuban southpaw.

 

10-9 Carbonell, typical lackadaisical start.

 

Hernández playing totally defensive, firing straight volleys to jam up the jab and left cross of Carbonell, but getting driven around the ring and rocked whenever Carbonell bothers sitting down on anything. Hernández down early in the round and nearly down on two more occasions late.

10-8 Carbonell, barely leaving second gear.

Hernández down early again. His balance is shaky. Carbonell just keeps lining him up with the 1-2, controlling him with the jab and never letting him get inside to get anything off. Hernández down a second time in the round. Hernández up and tries bulling in low to unload body shots, but Carbonell leans down on his back and smothers him until the ref breaks them up. Hernández hit and down again. Hernández rushes at Carbonell at the bell and is hoisted up in his arms like the goddamn "Time of My Life" scene in Dirty Dancing.

It's waved off before Hernández can get off his stool to answer the bell for the 4th. Not sure whether it was the referee or Hernández's own team who made the call.

Hernández is pissed, getting up in Carbonell's face arguing - unclear whether he takes issue with the result or the being lifted in the air like a puppy.

 

Carbonell is now 9-0 (6) ...I still can't decide if he's worth a hill of beans as a prospect. Just too hard to gauge anything with his LOC on this series. I'd like to see him tone up a bit, put in a full dedicated camp and take on somebody with a pulse.

 

Ryan Zempoaltecatl vs. Raymond Robert Chacón, 4 rounds @ welterweight

 

Interesting - the commentators named Carbonell vs. Hernández the "co-main event" numerous times, but it was fourth to last on the bill.

 

19 year old Ryan "The Pretty Boy / The Cobra" Zempoaltecatl hails from a Mexican-American boxing family of Nahuatl (indigenous) origins: trainer/gather German Zempoaltecatl, three sisters Nataly, Kimberly, and Jocelyn, and kid brother (literal toddler) Naythan who is already being shown the ropes.

Ray "Bad Boy" Chacón has a gargantuan edge in experience, a veteran of nearly eighty bouts to Zempoaltecatl's mere two - but the diminutive 37 year old southpaw has won just ten of those.

 

This size difference is INSANE.

Chacón has fought as low as bantam (probably a natural super feather, at most) and Zempoaltecatl is a huge welter - expect him to fill out to maybe a MW.

 

Zempoaltecatl winning these rounds but not doing very sharp work, just flurrying away like mad on a small old immobile man.

Early doors but definitely not a "run and tell your friends" prospect based on this showing.
