............Hmmm; good thread. Teofilo Stevenson - Cuba Laszlo Papp - Hungary (he was an Olympian, wasn't he? Someone help me out there) ..........For starters.
I dont know about top 10...But Ill chuck some names out there. Teofilo Stevenson Laszlo Papp Boris Lagutin Felix Savon Oleg Saitov Ariel Hernandez Mario Kindelan Guillermo Rigondeaux Josef Gruzdien Zou Shiming Kostya Tszyu was another excellent amateur but never had success at the olympics. Not a topic Im that knowledgeable on...Mostly it was the Cubans and eastern europeans that stayed amatuer long enough to become great.
The obvious ones are Papp, Stevenson and Savon. Then you also have Rigondeaux, Hernandez, Mallin, Vinent, Kindelan and Saitov who won back to back golds. Oliver Kirk won gold in both the bantam and feather weights in 1904, the only man to win two boxing golds in same games, George Finnegan won gold and silver in same 1904 games winning the fly and ironically losing the bantam final to Kirk.
dick mctaggert must be up near the top 1 gold medal with val barker trophy in 1956 1 bronze medal in 1960 (losing to eventual winner) quarter finals of 1964 ( losing to eventual winner) that is some good achievements
Stevenson, by his shear domination over multiple Olympiads, has to be rated best. But Papp, Ali, Roy Jones (robbed of gold!), Jeff Fenech (also robbed of gold!) have claims, as do many others. Many of course went on to win world titles.
Felix Savon Fabre, Teofilio Stevenson, Roberto Balado, Mario Kindelan (CUBA) Oscar De la Hoya, Ray Mercer, Ray Leonard, George Foreman, Cassius Clay, Mike Spinks, Joe Frazier, Meldrick Taylor, Pernell Whittacker, Mark Breland, Evander Holyfield.. (USA)
Roy Jones - who took the **** out of the Korean in the final. Mario Kindelan is a personal favourite..... Floyd Mayweather too, though he got ripped off in the semi final
