Dan Campbell screwed up in a lot of ways, but that's besides the point now. The Olympics are here and almost done for the USA now; so there's no point dwelling on the past. This team should have done so much better. Raynell Williams got dicked I thought; and Rau'shee just ****ed up badly; he was supposed to be our lock. But this team looked to be better than '04 or 2000, it looked to maybe be the best since 1988. But partly due to the judging and partly just due to other issues it just didn't pan out right. I had really high hopes for this team too.
i feel sorry for the light flywieghts. oubaali - shiming. i feel sorry for the frenchman. he was clearly ahead on the cards but got knocked down and jabbed and moved...noticeng that every punch the other guy landed was scored he jus legged it and landed the odd cross and hook.. and was up by 2-1 then in the last round he just charged home and lost a poitn for nothing then got knocked down form a palm of the fist. real bad judging the french dude was clearly ahead.
There have been WTF moments in almost every fight, due to the scoring being terrible. If I can see a clean shot landing on TV I don't see why 3 out of 5 judges shouldn't, especially when the guy on the receiving end has his head snapped back or doubles over in pain. The prime example was today when the ref gave the Algerian MW a standing count after a big punch from the Irish guy, yet the Irish MW didn't get a point for the punch:huh
After watching the trials, I didn't think this team was the best ever, but there was more talent than they showed in the ring. This was what I expected though before the tourney (not to sound like Emanuel Steward): ONE AND DONE: Ali Molina SECOND ROUND: Wilder QUARTERFINALS: Yanez Estrada SEMI-FINALS (no worse than Bronze): Russell FINALS (Gold or silver): Andrade Warren Williams *Losing Russell to weight issues was a big blow. *Yanez, Estrada, Warren, and Williams all fell below expectations. *Wilder has been a nice surprise, but it will be interesting if his plodding style will hold up against better fighters in the quarters.
It wasn't boring, a lot of inside fighting but not enough because of the excessive clinches...really frustrating to watch unless you were Artayev's trainer...the ref ruined the flow of the fight. Kinda like Tszyu-Hatton with Dave Parris F'ing things up.
Oops, typo on my part. Thanks for correcting me. Sutherland won that one going away in the last round. Sometimes it can be confusing when the country's flag is red and they're wearing the blue singlet or vice versa.
Wilder has been a pleasant surprise. With his draw I think he can win a silver; you can see him learning on the job which is good. When he really uses his 1-2 it's very good and fast; and his hook is very powerful.
I agree. He may be sloppy, but at least when he comes forward he throws that jab to temporarily obstruct his opponent's vision (as well as keep his distance for the right cross).
Well, Deontay also only has like 25-30 fights, period. Overall. He's still very raw and inexperienced, I think he won the trials going in with only 17 fights. And I know he did beat Chakhiev earlier this year in Russia.
