what is the point? i know some do make it in pro game but i am fed up of hearing 'he has Olympic whatever'...it is almost 2 different sports look at Luke Campbell,Agogo etc...
Frankie gavin world amateur champion was tipped for big things at the olympics if he didnt have the weight issues...
Your correct though, practically 2 different sports, some can adapt some cant, some just aint made for the pro game and on the flip side some average amateurs male great pros
Yeh of course its very different boxing over 3 rounds compared to 12, but having a great amateur background is still the best prep someone can get for a career in boxing and id guess most of the modern greats have had top level experience. So would have to disagree somewhat and say its quite a relevant statement
To put it another way, it'd probably be harder to name a great over the last 20 years who didnt have a good amatuer background wold it not?
Campbell is getting better and better his coach will benefit him hugely and will push and match him pretty hard he will show khan how its done after the guy found it very hard to get work after the blame was thrown his way
I completly agree that amteur boxing for many provides a great platform for pro boxing, but there are cases where boxers with bad/average records such as bernard hopkins, jonny nelson, rocky mariano achieve a lot as pros, on the opposite hands the likes of frankie gavin and bradley saunders, fraudley harrison great amateurs, as pros? Hmmmmmm, think the OP was being hard on luke campbell though he will be a future world champ
i didnt make my point properly... i dont really see an olympic boxing medal as such an amazing acheivment ...Campbell will be over 30 before he gets a sniff of a proper belt...imo i think it would serve them better turning pro earlier or at least when they turn pro fight in a higher class like Lomo did
With WSB the modern day top amateur gets a better pro apprenticeship than a pro. If I have boxer A win an ABA title turn pro and box 8 4x3 over 2 years v journeyman, it doesn't come close to to boxer B having 8 5x3 in WSB against top level opponents as well as probably 4/5 tournaments internationally with 4/5 3x3 fights over a week or so. It's nowhere near the different game it once was. If you have even a decent senior amateur they should have 8-10 50/50 fights a season 3 x 3 no headguard your average novice pro will have maybe 4 4x3 fights over same period all heavily in their favour
I think he meant you don't need a great amateur career to be a very successful pro, you will in most case need a good amateur career at least to give yourself the solid foundation for your pro career. Well that's my interpretation on this topic.
