Olympic gold medallist and former WBO heavyweight world champion, 'Merciless' Ray Mercer celebrates his 61st birthday today.

'The first time I put on a pair of gloves, I was 23 years old and had been asked to be a sparring partner in Germany. That’s when I really caught onto it, that I liked it. I asked the trainer to show me how to defend myself without getting beat up every day. He showed me and in about two months, I made the guy I was sparring quit.' - Ray Mercer

    Happy Birthday to the champ.

His KO over Tommy will go down in history.

Great fighter, as tough as they come with a chin to match.

Other than that, his birthday was the 4th April...

I remember being well impressed with him in the 88 Olympics: the one you had to KO the South Korean to get the draw. Was fast and heavy handed. No shock to me he went on to have a sterling pro career.

Ray was a formidable fighter in his time and has featured in some entertaining slugfests. Great chin, decent power and came to fight. He inevitably went on too long and latter fights in his career were questionable but in his pomp he was a good fighter to watch. Many happy returns, Ray.

Wow, didn't know he fought 6 more years after the "offense is defense" version of Vlad klobbered him. Very entertaining fighter.

Makes for interesting fantasy matchups with fighters like Fury, AJ, Usyk and Wilder.

Mercer did beat a prime-near prime Lewis. Prime Mercer would steamroll AJ and Wilder in same night and Fury next day.
