For those who care about the future of the heavyweight division, I'll update you on the final four in the 91+KG Divison at the Olympics, and draw a comparison of a more famous pro fighter so this thread can stay here. I'm not saying the amateur will be as good as the professional I'm comparing him to, but I will say who I compare him to a professional Tony Yoka (FRA). 6'5" 1/2 tall. 24-year-old A skilled and mobile big man with a very shaky chin. As far as amateur points scoring goes, Yoka is a tough out! I'd compare him to Tyrell Biggs when Biggs was a hot amateur prospect but lacked the chin for the pro game. He fights Filip Hrgović in the semi-finals. Likely to go pro. Filip Hrgović 6'6" tall, 24 years old. The best pro prospect of the bunch, Hrgovic KO'd six men in a row in the very pro like World Series of Boxing and knocked a decent Lanier Pero (CUB) silly in round two of the tournament. He reminds me skill wise of the best version of Andrew Golota, except his poise, heart, and chin is much better. We'll see if he gets gold ( judging has been an issue at the Olympics ), but his professional potential is possibly the best since Wladimir Klitschko. Likely to go pro. He fights Yoka next. Joe Joyce. 6'6" tall, 30 years old. Joyce is a pure slugger. He lacks fundamentals and defense, but there is not doubt he can hit a ton. I'd compare him to a younger Geroge Foreman, minus the refinement, and chin. Joyce has been Ko'd a few times, most notably by young pro Sergey Kuzmin and by unsung Algerian Hamza Beguerni. Personally, I do not think his chin is " Audley Harrison or Herbie Hide " bad, but with no defense, he's going to get whacked in the pros unless he refines his game. He fights Dychko next. Ivan Dychko. 6'8 1/2" tall. Age 26. Dychko possesses a unique set of skills. He fights like a more mobile Vitali Klitschko. He's footwork / footspeed for a fighter his size can be astounding. While Dychko can hit and take a punch, he's not on Vitali's level for power or chin. Decent skills.Dychko is too big for the smaller fighters, too fast for the larger fighters. A matchup nightmare in the pros. I'd compare him to Vitali Klitschko. Not sure if he will go professional though a few fighters from Kazakhstan's have over the years. Some additional comments: This is a very good final four. Sorry fans of smaller heavies, as you can see by the size of the final four, these are big men.
Very nice ****ysis of all. Very much agree, Filip has the most potential out of all of them in the pros. Dychko and Yoka and to a reasonable extent, Joyce, are phoneys.
Thanks. Joyce can be exciting in the pro's. He's the next David Price...we'll he take a better punch than Price. Joyce has crude skills, but you can't say he's boring. A puncher for sure!
Hrgovic is near to go pro he put weight on in past 2 years so I don't think he is really motivated for amateurs. He said he wants to win gold and turn pro.I think he will turn pro even if he doesn't win gold. I don't think Dychko will ever go pro. Yoka is still just 24 years old so I don't think he will turn pro for the time being. Joyce said he will turn pro after Rio olympics win or loose. And Hearn said he is interested in Joe Joyce.
I think Dychko is the best of the bunch, but class is not that strong. Dychko would also make a good pro because of his size and movement, but he lacks power and chin. He's a big guy that can win decisions against most fighters, but an aggressive fighter can find his chin and knock him out. Hrgović is good all-around fighter, but he seems to lack 12 round stamina. In a long fight, he becomes less and less effective and could lose by decision or TKO later in the fight. Yoka looks like he's a good all-around fighter, but he is chinny and his defense is leaky. He can move and can outbox some guys early, but he's always vulnerable. He's particularly open to the uppercut. An OK class overall, but no real stand outs. Dychko has the most potential if he can work out the flaws.
Dychko was only stopped once by the best puncher in the amateur ranks. Hardly chinny. I disagree. If you look at finals fours, this is a good one. Maybe no Wlad or Lewis, but its hard to call a clean winner here.
He's as old as Audley Harrison in every way.. started at 23.. 30 years old and all that.. But this years generation boxes without headgear and 5 rounds.. it's a bit of an oxymoron..
It's good in that they're competitive with each other. I'm looking at this class to see if there are any standouts that would be on the level of the guys you mentioned... Lewis and Wlad, or even an AJ.
Nistor said that Yoka is gonna get all the decisions from the judges no matter what and I don't disagee. He hasn't impressed in his two fights so far. He stopped moving so much which is good because he saves more energy but Hrgovic will hurt him if he tries to stand his ground more. Filip seems to be aware that he can't trust the judges here based on the interviews I've read. To me Hrgovic is a better fighter than Yoka but Yoka is better at the point scoring for 3 round fights
Nobody stands out as elite to me been watching what I can on YouTube. But if several go pro it will. Be interesting to have more super heavy type guys to round out the division.
