The long-time WBO flyweight titlist (16 title defenses dating back to '02 :scaredas has moved up to super fly and is looking to beat Everth Briceno on Saturday for the WBO 115 lb title vacated by Jorge Arce upon his move to bantamweight. I've never heard of Briceno, either. He's never left Nicaragua, but he took Fernando Montiel 12 rounds once. :conf So how much does the Argentine Hurricane have left? He's getting on in years, and was always sloppily effective. He's got a weird version of peekaboo defense that looks like he's using a lat machine with an underhand grip. He punches in volume and if one of them happens to land with power, great, otherwise, oh well. It's an interesting style to have kept someone undefeated so long. Does he stand any chance in a unification dance with Nongqayi and Darchinyan?
I've always liked Narvaez. Entertaining style, quick, decent power, throws punchers in bunches, good reactions, can be elusive when he wants to be. I just wished he would have left Argentina earlier and fought some of the bigger names. I think he can still make some noise. He looked decent against Whitfield and Soto.
He really is a handy little fighter, I think he could have pushed a lot of the bigger names really close at 112-115. But he was content to fight the 11-15 ranked fighters mostly at home but it must be noted he went abroad several times early in his career...and didnt fight absolute scrubs when he did. He burnt a few bridges when it came to going for bigger fights...Really pissed off Shaw when he had the Darchinyan fight on the table when Vic was the champ at fly...****ed around a bit with coming out the Oz to fight Hussein, in the end though I think Hussy got sick and that was the final straw, Im not so sure Hussein would have won that one. You look at his achievements at face value and you would be impressed...16 defences, 2 weight champ..but only in this multi belt era could he get away with that. Even though he seriously isnt a bad fighter nor a paper champ, reminds me a lot Zsolt Erdei in that regard, I just dont think he is all that keen on going after the big fights. He might pull out a Grigorian and go for a decent payday outside of Argentina really late in his career..who knows. I wouldnt be surprised if he retires after 2 or 3 more fights, I think he and his management would be pretty happy with the way his career has gone.
