Round 1 Tamayo throws a long right jab, angling his skinny frame to the side to keep squared as Cayetano circles him rapidly. Cayetano stays on the outside, pecking with some left hooks but getting driven back by the left hand of Tamayo. Big right hand stepping in by Cayetano before darting back out. Cayetano keeps turning Tamayo but isn't throwing much. Tamayo watches and drops down to Cayetano's height (a good few inches shorter) while keeping his fists high at the sides of his head. Cayetano jabs up at Tamayo, but is just measuring range and not landing. Not a lot in the round. 10-9 Tamayo
Round 2 Cayetano circles and throws a long jab, just to keep distance but not touching Tamayo with it. Big right hand by Cayetano carries him off balance and he falls flat on his butt. No knockdown (Tamayo hadn't even punched). Tamayo stands tall and waits for Cayetano to cease his outside circling and come forward, spinning like a dial. Cayetano hops on his toes and stops circling long enough to pique Tamayo's interest and get him walking forward. Cayetano tries to land a counter jab/uppercut and then get back on the move. Cayetano has switched to southpaw. He trades right jabs with Tamayo, both pawing at the air. Another uneventful round.
Round 3 Cayetano is complaining about shots behind the head. Tamayo is walking forward and throwing long lefts and right hooks as Cayetano circles away. In and out dashes by Cayetano allow him to get a few jabs in but his overhand rights on the taller opponent don't quite reach. Right hook by Tamayo as Cayetano circles out by the ropes. Tamayo works his right jab while turning to keep up with Cayetano's movement. Cayetano reaches and falls short with his left jab. Tamayo lands a left to the body. 30-27 Tamayo
Round 4 Cayetano circles but can't get inside on Tamayo, puzzling out a way to bypass that right jab. Tamayo keeps rolling it out consistently, pinpointing but not quite landing it as Cayetano keeps his distance. Now they're trading!!!! Whoa! Big shots by both, legs kicking out and replanting as they each get their heads snapped back. Tamayo is brought to a neutral corner to have a physician check out a cut on his eye. Time in. Cayetano circles quickly to his right. Tamayo throws a long left to the body. Right hooks to the flanks now by Tamayo. Good action in that round. This is starting to boil.
This is only an 8 rounder, and neither of these guys is even a top ten super bantamweight in Mexico (so there isn't any minor title or anything close to world ranking on the line) but they're fighting with that peacock pride that has come to define their country! :bbb
Round 5 Cayetano circles and fires a right jab, having converted to southpaw. Tamayo pumps his way in with left and right uppercuts to the body as he drives Cayetano back into a corner. Big looping left by Tamayo catches Cayetano circling with his hands down. Cayetano walks into a couple of right jabs trying to duck underneath. Cayetano keeps circling left, now orthodox again. Wild flurry by Cayetano to buy some space as he is nearly walked into the ropes. Tamayo comes forward, blocking the right jab of the once-again southpaw Cayetano. Hard 1-2 by Tamayo. 50-45
Wow, Lamazon's unofficial Box Azteca scorecard has it tight. 48-47 for Tamayo. I guess Lamazon is the Latin Lederman (or Watt, depending on your frame of reference ).
Round 6 Tamayo leads with long left uppercuts and drives Cayetano back to the corner. Tamayo jabs and follows in no hurry. Cayetano is playing possum on the ropes, letting Tamayo throw his wild uppercuts and countering with some short rights that land well. Tamayo tries to place his right jab on the shorter man, now in orthodox stance exclusively. Cayetano lands a wide but hard left hook to the body. Tamayo is lunging with shots now, overextending and missing - and worse, getting countered with those short rights that shake his cranium. 10-9 Cayetano 59-55 Tamayo
Round 7 Tamayo wades in with right jabs and long spidery left uppercuts. They trade at short range and Cayetano is putting up some good shots inside Tamayo's reach. Cayetano is landing the right jab very fluidly as he circles out, showing some good switch-hitting skill. Tamayo is knocked back by a right jab as he comes forward asleep at the wheel. Cayetano has his arms swinging low like an Argentine, circling and jabbing out of the orthodox stance now. They tie up until the bell. 10-9 Cayetano
