Omar Narvaez Vs. Cesar Seda-UPDATED

That's right folks, WBO super-flyweight champion Omar ''El Huracan'' Narvaez is finally fighting an adversary that could potentially wrest the title from his grasp. After making 18 defences of his crown over an 8 year span, Narvaez lacks a single career-defining win, due to the fact he feasts on relatively soft mandatories that offer him little resistance. Well, it appears as though it could now conceiveably be his downfall as young Cesar Seda has worked his way into a #1 contender position.

In my opinion, Narvaez, along with Cristian ''El Diamante'' Mijares has been the best at super-flyweight in recent years, though at 35 there are signs that his age may be starting to conspire against him. He's never been the most entertaining fighters, he is reliant on his adept defensive capabilities, using his feet and reflexes, while coming in quickly, landing his right hook and straight left, before retreating quickly. One wonders if he can still do this as effectively in his advanced years.

Seda has looked impressive in his career so far, the 25 year old has racked up two decent wins against Jose Lopez(who gave Marvin Sonsona some trouble) and Daniel Reyes. The Puerto Rican is an intelligent fighter, controlling fights using his accurate jab, staying patient, and landing good, quick counter punches(his counter left-uppercut is quite deceptive and often very easy to miss if you're not looking closely) on his oncoming adversary. Like the Argentinian, Seda also posseses a good defense, though blocks and smothers his opponents shots more so than avoiding them. He'll have a three inch height advantage and is 8 years Narvaez' junior, both of which could prove crucial come fight night.

UPDATE: Narvaez won by scores of 117-110 twice, and 115-112. Great performance from Omar, really dispelled the rumours that age might be catching up with him. Make no mistake, Seda is a good fighter, he got a little bit too ragged for his own good when confronted with El Hurricane's defense, accuracy and fluid combinations. He's only 25 though, and can come again. As for Narvaez, he's finally taken on a worthwhile challenger, and I hope he continues to do so. I'd love him to fight Mijares at some point, and if not that unification bouts with Hugo Cazares or Tomas Rojas would suffice.

:goodI'm just glad Narvaez is taking on somebody with a bit of quality, which Junito appears to have. My opinion on it keeps changing, I'm finding it difficult to pick a winner and stick to it. It's a mixture of two questions really, is Narvaez past it and Seda coming into his prime? Or is El Huracan well-preserved and this fight has come too early for Seda? Hard to tell, all I know is that I like this fight.

 

I'm reserving judgement until the bell rings, methinks. Mijares beats both though.

Unbeaten two-divisional and current WBO super flyweight champion Omar “El Huracán” Narvaez (33-0-2, 19 KOs) of Argentina will defend his title this Friday at the Club Estudiantes de Bahia Blanca, Bahia Blanca, Buenos Aires, Argentina. Narvaez’ opponent will be unbeaten Cesar Seda (20-0, 15 KOs) of Puerto Rico. On paper it would appear to be Narvaez’ toughest fight in a few years but the champion always seems to rise to the occasion when tested like this.

Narvaez is one of boxing’s hidden talents but very big star in his native Argentina where he sells out large venues regularly. Narvaez won his first world title with just over a year and half under his belt as a pro. He is the longest current reigning world champion in boxing dating back to 2002 when he won his first world title. Though 35 years old Narvaez seems to be getting better and has shown no signs at all of slowing down. Fightnews spoke with Narvaez as he is just days away from his next title defense.

In 2009 a young and hungry (22-0) Raynota Whitfield of the U.S. was thought to be serious threat to take your title and you had one of your best career wins by stopping him in 10. Do these type of fights bring out the best in you?

This is absolutely correct. When I am faced with opponents that are supposed to be a serious threat to dethrone me it brings out the best in me.

What do you know about Seda?

From what I have seen of him he seems very fast, athletic and strong.

You obviously have the edge in experience entering this fight but do you see yourself as the puncher in this fight?

Time will tell come fight night if he is indeed stronger than me or not. I will show him respect as I do all my opponents.

Should you be victorious Saturday night are you looking to unify with another champion in 2011?

I have been trying to do a unificiation for years. Even when I was at 112 pounds.

What seems to be the main issue why unification has never happened for you?

I have been set to have a unification numerous times and they have all fallen out for one reason or another. Last year I was set to have a unification with one of the Kameda brothers and then I was informed he would fight someone else instead.

You’re 35 but you don’t appear to be slowing down at all. Could you see yourself moving up to 118 at some point since all the bigger names and likely larger purses are at that weight?

This has definitely crossed my mind. 118 is a big jump because of the size but the lucrative paydays and the big names are there right now. It also would be an opportunity to fight in the U.S. A fight with Vic Darchiniyan would be a very good fight as well as some others in the division.
