I'm just done watching the fight and what an embarrassement...that wasn't just a domination...Hughes was basically ridiculed , even in the wrestling department !... He was totally helpless...where does the guy goes from now ?

    He's ****ed !....
Just like Nogueira used to be in pride's HW divison. (because of Fedor).

as long as gsp stays champion (well , if he beats serra)...Hughes's career is finished....maybe not entirely , (he can always be a gatekeeper ) but apart from that ?...he'll never be champ again...it's officially OVER for him.

Gsp was using wrestling , bjj , judo , kickboxing...a bit of everything , and Hughes was just too one dimensional for this guy....He's always been one dimensional but his wrestling ability and his pure strength always used to save his ass...
but if his wrestling becomes useless against a guy like this...then there's not much he can do..

    I agree...

Matt Hughes will probably never be champion again. It's sort of the same deal with Rich Franklin. It's a weird spot to be in, I imagine, being able to beat every single person in the world EXCEPT for ONE GUY who sits on top.

I wouldn't say he ruined his career. Hughes has had a pretty good career. He's just been in a lot of fights and he's getting older.

But yes, GSP is clearly superior in pretty much every way to Hughes.

Matt is definitely hoping for a repeat in the Serra/GSP rematch so he can get a shot at Serra and one more chance to win the belt back.

Ruined, give me a ****ing break. 41-6, most title defenses in major MMA ever, he loses at the twilight of his career to perhaps the pound for pound greatest in all of MMA and you say that his career is ruined. He is a hall of famer and one of the greatest of all time, something all these key board warrior haters can only dream about.

well , hughes' past is what it is...and no one will ever forget it...
But where does he goes from here ?...what can he do ? It's over!..****in' over. At least as "the champ" it is....he's gonna be a gatekeeper as long as the french dude stays in this org.

I think he meant ruined his future career in MMA. It would be, practically, a dishonor for Matt Hughes to become a gatekeeper at this stage of his career, as great as he has been. I think what the poster was saying was, NOW, because of his losses to GSP, Matt has no real future in MMA.

I don't think he was trying to discredit Matt. Although, He may be the last champion of a dying MMA era. The era where being the very very best at one thing was enough to become a dominant champion. Much like no one should dismiss the greatness of Royce Gracie, no one should dismiss the greatness of Matt Hughes, but as I said, he may be one of the last of the "old" mma champions.

It still seemed like he didn't say he was retiring just yet...I'm sure he would rather GSP beat Serra, so he and Serra could have a match....that fight would still create interest, but I'm sure he has no interest in fighting GSP ever again....actually it prob wouldn't even be sanctioned.....hehehe

He won't be champ again, barring a miracle. But then again, he's 34 anyway, held the title longer than anyone, and beat a veritable whos who of MMA fighters. He had to get knocked off his perch eventually. I imagine he will win a few victories against some lower name opponents at 170, then get one more big fight. After GSP beats Serra, Hughes will probably get him in a grudge match. There's still money to be made between a Matt and Matt fight, title or no title. After that, Hughes will probably fade away.

The diffrence with Rich is that he wasnt that dominant to begin with.He never had a bread and butter the way Matt did with his strength and wrestling background.Rich was labelled as a "Freestyle" fighter? I mean what exactly is a "Freestyle" fighter? Its a shame but as much as Rich was found out vs Silva the gulf in class is the same with GSP and Hughes.Neither man evolved to make his game better.Hughes just contiuned to do what his always done.Which is be a good clean living Christian,Hunt and wresle.:yep

While GSP will definitely be favoured against Serra, what if he got caught again? Well, Hughes would get a title shot against Serra. So, saying Hughes is done is a bit premature.

Granted, I'll be very surprised if Serra/GSP II is a repeat of their first fight.

However, if GSP beats Serra, we'll probably see Hughes/Serra anyways. Considering the bad blood, it's too enticing of a matchup to not happen.

Every champion has a moment when everyone knows that its time to quit and still maintain dignity. Hughes' time was this fight versus GSP.

Hughes should of tried to trade with GSP not wrestle.
