Because that would have worked right? Are you serious? Hughes was in with a shout because of his wrestling and physical strength. But striking with GSP would have ended the fight even sooner just like there 1st bout.
Last time he tried to trade with GSP he ate a high kick to the head. I guess he figured he'd rather get subbed than knocked out cold. Can't say I blame him.
I think Hughes fought as well as he could have.. The problem with guys like Hughes is that he really is one dimensional, a wrestler.. He needs to go for the takedown in order to have a shot, so just about everyone is going to prepare for the takedown.. I think Hughes would school Serra, but the thing about Serra is that he does have a good punch.. A guy like Dan Henderson is more dynamic on the ground and lb for lb can match almost anybody light heavy down, in the world with his type of strength, plus he has a right hand that he sets up very well for a wrestler that has KO written all over it. Hughes would need at least one huge strike, and be able to deliver it in such a way that it would keep wrestlers honest.. Also, GSP is an absolute freak. Really is no shame in losing to a guy like GSP.. He's probably going to go down as one of the most dynamic fighters lb for lb in the history of the sport.
Henderson is infinetly more dangerous on his feet, but he is not as dynamic on the ground as Hughes, Hughes has stopped alot of good to great grapplers on the ground by outgrappling them.
But can you picture anybody ever man handling Henderson the way Hughes was by GSP? I think Henderson has some serious strength.. If Hughes has good wrestler strength for his weight, then Henderson has ****** wrestler strength for his.
Not ruined but certainly ended (one would hope). It was a pretty humiliatingly dominant performance...this was like MMA's Calzaghe-Lacy (if that fight had included an armbar). Not to compare Hughes to Lacy...but the outclassing in every area on a big stage.
I wasn't talking about his where his stood skill wise, but the fact that he has asserted he had no more than 2 or 3 fights left. After that, he probably would only come back for a Serra fight I would think.
that's about all....I suspect Fitch, Koscheck would be great fights and even Serra or Sanchez....I don't put Hughes above any of these guys.
Hughes still has the best welterweight resmue in UFC history, he lost to probally the best UFC fighter in the world right now, and remember he made GSP sub in less than a round in their first match. Am I the only one who wants to see GSP vs Anderson Silva?
I think Fitch or Koscheck might beat Hughes on their best night but I give each about a 30% chance. Hughes beats Serra and Sanchez quite handly.
Yah, but you know how it works. Once a guy loses, his fans suddenly claim he is "past his prime." Thus, the losses don't count. Consult with an Evander Holyfield fan on how this works. According to them, he's never actually lost a fight.
I wouldn't want to see GSP vs Anderson Silva because Im a fan a both and wouldnt want to see GSP loose. Anderson is a bigger guy and his striking is at another level. There isn't any other striker in MMA that I could think of that moves so well on his feet and works off so many different angles and is so accurate. The guy looks like he dances on water as he breaks down his opponents. A combination of finesse with brutality.
