When Montiel got up, he was so wobbly that he almost went back down again. The ref should have waved it off right then and there.

He gave him another chance, he when down hard but he was the Champ and the ref stop the fight just seconds later, he took 2 punches after he got up, and by the lookf of it, he took it well.

The referee had a very good reason for that:

Ref at start of round two: *Hmmm, another good fight, it's probably gonna go for 12 rounds ! Hey, is that Manny Pacquiao in the audie-*
    *Donaire KTFO Montiel*
Ref: "Donaire go to the corner !" *Damn I missed the knock out*
Ref: "Ok, 1, 2 3, ....7, 8.." *Hmmm, wave now, or wait to see the next knockout*
Ref to Montiel: "Ok, pal you look great !, let's go another round" *Lol maybe I'll see it this time*

    :rofl

When Montiel collapsed over twitching and shaking id have stopped it there and then.

Its good to let a champ get up and see if he can continue but Moniel was basically KTFO.

Reminds me of when Tsyzu KO Judah....THAT got stopped immediatly ao why wasnt this?

I agree. Althought the champion should be allowed a little more leadway than combatants in a non title fight that fight could have been stopped before Montiel even hit the canvas. He was convulsing on the floor for Christ sake. When he got up he didn't even know where he was and his eyes were glazed over. I cannot think of any fight I've ever seen where a fighter was that hurt and went on to win let alone finish the fight. The funny thing is one of these moronic ESB posters obsessed w/ glass jaws is praising the stoppage.

It was not a bad referee at all in my eyes. Montiel did so ****ing well to get to his feet after that, it was amazing that he could stand on his feet, and when he jumped to his feet he wasn't wobbling around so he earned his chance to fight on.

The first punch that landed was fair and the fight should've been called. Was it Jones that said he should've been given the benefit of the doubt and proved his toughness after not folding like a lawn chair after that punch landed and the ref called it? Couldn't say it better myself. Both men deserve heaps of credit, and it's refreshing to see a correct stoppage instead of an early one, for a change.

I don't think it was bad. After the KD, Montiel looked alright, hence ref letting it continue. When it was obvious he had nothing, ref stopped it right away, not allowing unnecessary punishment go on. Good call.

when the ref said come to me, and montiel didn't he should have stopped it right there. he wasn't coherent enough to hear the instructions, but the montiel camp could have said language barrier as well but i'm sure montiel at least understands that much english.

The official's gaze was averted when Montiel began to twitch on the canvas, because he was in the process of directing Nanito toward the neutral corner. Had he seen Montiel's convulsion, I think it's likely he would have stopped the fight that very second.

So, it comes down to whether or not Mora should have stopped the fight after Montiel belly flopped after making his first attempt to get off the mat. And in a high profile fight, I think he gave Fernando the benefit of the doubt once he say him climb back to his feet and stand on fairly steady legs.

Had Mora let the fight go on much further, then I think the hue and cry about his performance would have been completely warranted. But given the circumstances, I'm not inclined to think the official's performance was as atrocious as others on this site.

I agree that this is not the standard case of black and white, should he or shouldn't he have stopped it, because of some of the circumstances you cited. I think for the most part referees need to act within an acceptable range of action in order to avoid widespread criticism. Stop it too late and someone can get seriously hurt or worse, stop it too soon and take away any chance a fighter has of continuing and all that goes along with that.

I think the ref acted within the acceptable range of action, but barely. He pushed the envelope.

Montiel was defenseless when the fight resumed. He reacted extremely late to Donaire's 1st hook when the action resumed.

He certainly would have been within his rights to stop it immediately following the punch, when Montiel lost control of his limbs.

It would have also been within his rights to stop it when Montiel wasn't responding to his commands. (This is when I would have liked him to have stopped it personally)

Montiel did get to his feet and the ref may have he erred on the side of the champ, as opposed to caution.

He may have stopped it a bit too late, but certainly not a moment too soon.

It could have been stopped earlier but I wouldn't call it bad stoppage. He got his ass up, his legs looked steady and he was the defending champ. Once the ref saw he couldn't defend himself he stopped it immediately. Can't tell if the ref saw him shaking on the ground or not since he was directing Nonito to the corner, and when he was telling him to come forward it looked like Montiel was looking at his corner, not he wasn't coherent enough to hold his hands up and respond to the ref.

Ridiculous. This ref stopped the fight at EXACTLY the right time, and he should be applauded for allowing the fight to go to its NATURAL conclusion. It is astounding that any boxing fan would object to this. Back in my day, boxing fans rightfully bitched when refs called fights too quickly. Now, they whine and criticize when fights are allowed to end as they SHOULD. Unbelievable! :patsch

You people are idiots, that Ref did a perfect call!

First he gave the man a count, which any knocked down fighter has the right to.

Then, he spoke to Montiel and Montiel nods and responds.

And then once Nonito jumped on him and hit him with two other shots and Montiel wobbled and didn't respond, he immediately jumped in and waived it off.

This Ref was perfect, he didn't panic because the guy got knocked down hard, and he didn't ignore the clear signs once he finished his count and let the fight resume that Montiel was done.

PERFECTION BY THE REF......anyone who says differently DOES NOT KNOW THE SPORT!
