Oh, he certainly would have been within his rights to stop it at any point following the moment when Montiel hit the mat. Not too many people (save Zakman) would have complained about that. certainly not I.

I'm just saying that Mora can't necessarily be faulted for letting the fight continue based on what he saw when he turned his attention back to Montiel. By that time, the downed fighter had regained control of his limbs and was making an ultimately sucessful attempt to rise to his feet.

That gives Mora maybe three seconds to determine if the fighter can continue. It didn't appear that Montiel was responsive, but Mora had a closer look at the fighter than I did, and perhaps when Montiel spread his hands, he was trying to indicate his willingness to continue.

Interestingly, Doniare didn't throw his follow-up hook until after Montiel raised his hands (which I will certainly agree was a bit late in coming.) Nice display of sportsmanship there to not take a free shot that was open to him. It looked like Mora was going to stop the fight after it connected, but wasn't in position to intercede until after Donaire followed up with the right hand. (And yes, there is some criticism that could be leveled against him for that).

But all things considered, the statement in bold is something we both can agree upon.

Did Montiel take any more unnecessary punishment ? No , not really.. Not another hard shot landed... The ref gave motiel the benefit of the doubt for beating the count . He had the belts, he deserved that. The ref stopped it the second that montiel showed that he couldn't protect himself. Good job by the ref...

Some of you guys are ridiculous , go watch another sport.. This is boxing , not ballet.

    f'n Zakman.

Well, hindsight is always 20/20. The ref will learn from this.

I think it was the right choice. Montiel was the champ, he got up from a monstrous punch that had him down hard and looked to be on steady ground. I didn't see him wobbling after he got up and I would have let him continue. The ref immediately saw Montiel had nothing left and called it before Montiel took more punishment. Montiel and his corner are all probably very happy that they were afforded every opportunity to make something happen, and Montiel didn't take hardly any more punishment for it.

    Right call.

Exactly. Nice to see that there are some boxing fans left who recognize the importance of letting fights go to DEFINITIVE, NATURAL conclusions, rather than terminating them PREMATURELY!!!!!
