On Feb 15 1970, Joe Frazier And The Knockouts sang on The Ed Sullivan Show, Joe sang Knock On Wood. It can be seen on You Tube.
Should've seen this coming from the guy who brings up Carol Burnett every time Ingemar Johansson is discussed and thought a thread on the greatest catchers was about the greatest baseball catchers.
Ha Ha, I just found that scene. Joe Frazier has a really good voice, he should have had a sing off against Ernie Terrell, he also had a group, The Heavyweights, his sister Jean Terrell sang with brother Ernie also. Jean was a member of Diana Ross And The Supremes. I think that Joe sings better than Ingo.
I remember watching Joe Frazier and the Knockouts singing "Knock on Wood" on that Ed Sullivan show! I had looked for it on YouTube previously but didn't find it; now I will look it up and watch it again. Thanks for the post!
I just watched the clip on YouTube. I had not remembered Joe standing on a platform that was a mockup of a boxing ring, but it was a high-energy, spirited number that the studio audience really enjoyed. Joe was a pretty decent singer, as well. At the conclusion, Ed Sullivan walked up the steps into the 'ring' to chat with Joe and wish him well in the Ellis fight the following night. It was really great seeing it again after all those years!
Jean replaced Diana Ross as lead vocalist when Diana left for a solo career. Jean had the better voice in my opinion. Muhammad Ali also had a fair voice. Check out his version of Stand By Me
I liked Jean better with the Supremes also.. I particularly liked their collaboration with the Four Tops on "River Deep, Mountain High." Muhammad Ali's recording of "Stand By Me" was a good recording. It 'bubbled under' on the charts, meaning that it charted, but didn't crack the Top 100. He recorded it as Cassius Clay. In Ali's autobiography, he tells of getting a ride from Joe Frazier from Philadelphia into New York in 1970 and the two of them singing that song along the way.
