On his very best night, who was better: The lightweight Penn or the welterweight GSP?

Penn at lightweight is a scary animal, it was inconsistency and almost complete lack of dedication/motivation/whatevs that let him down. However, even a lazy Penn is dangerous. In the early days he tore the arse out of an entire division without anything even resembling fight training. It was only when the game caught up with him that he truly started to show signs of mortality.

GSP is always motivated, always dedicated, and most importantly always dominant. I think the best GSP was the one that made Penn quit on his stool, and displayed a text book case pushing **** in on Jon Fitch. But, with the exception of Penn fighting to the death, he hasn't finished an opponent in 4 (soon to be five) years.

With that in mind I'll be going with Penn. It's a shame his potential more often than not far outweighed his performance.

 

I think BJ's best preformance was against Florian at LW. At that time Florian was steamrolling on his way to a LW title shot and finishing almost everybody. In that fight BJ was in great shape and actually had abs. I think he knew Florian was a real threat and had to be at his best and he certainly was finishing Ken in the fourth.

I think GSP had alot of tougher fights against guys like Hughes,Kos,Fitch,Alves and even Shields at the time. I think GSP-Hughes 2 was his biggest fight at the time and made Hughes look like an ameteur finishing him brutally.

I would have to with GSP just because GSP-Hughes was a big fight at that time when Hughes was still in his prime and GSP was just coming out as a superstar. That fight Hughes handed the torch over.

 

:thumbsup exactly If penn had the dedication of GSP, i think he would have been the GOAT. He had so much talent but lack discipline.

With that said, i have to pick GSP just cuz he is more dedicated to his training.

You should have stated no BJ excuses are accepted in the question. The "an in shape" BJ or "motivated" BJ crap is not acceptable. The could have, should have ,would have crap is only speculation.

I pick GSP because on his best night he demolished a prime Hughes, and on Penn's best night he demolished a prime Diego Sanchez. Hughes > Sanchez therefore GSP.

GSP is the more consistent of the two. I also rate Penn's quick win over Hughes (first fight) as impressive as any of GSP's achievements. I'm not a big fan of simply nullifying the opponent, I like killer instinct. So for me, on his best night, Penn was better.

Who is 'greater'? Most probably GSP for long reign of dominance and two wins over Penn.
