I was just thinking about it then and Hearns actually has the better wins at 175lbs and it shocked me a bit because we only think of Hearns as a great 147 and 154lbder. Hearns beat Hill and Andries who were better than anyone James Toney beat at 175lbs I’m not saying that Hearns would beat him, I’m just saying that Hearns has the better wins at 175lbs, I would actually pick Toney to stop him whilst behind on points What are your opinions on this?
Toney was not a very successful light heavyweight. I would pick Hearns to beat this version of Toney. Hearns would beat him at MW too. It's cruiser where I see Toney finally walking him down.
Neither of them were washed at 175lbs, they were both in their 20s at points at light heavyweight and both had good wins from that point and onwards
They were both good at LH but past their best. I'd say Toney was more of a disappointment at that weight. Head to head, it's tough to say.
Well because by the time Hearns fought at light heavyweight he had had his great career fighting Cuevas, Leonard, Benitez, Duran and Hagler.. it was more of an icing on the cake to get the titles at the weights. Toney did not have that history of fighting the level Hearns did at the lower weights, so his legacy still depended on what he did at the higher weights, and he didn't come from as far below as welterweight.
Toney would crush hearns at LHW and middle honestly, but the Hitman did then better work at LHW a weight i thought James would have flourished at.
Toney wasn't taking fitness seriously during that time in his life. I don't know why people to continue to point to it as some kind of barometer of his talent when it was a short run in a division with no big names sandwiched in between fighter of the year awards at the weights directly below and above it
I don't feel this really. The way Hearns fought against Andries was better than he did against Hill. He was a little younger and faster in the Andries fight, and I think his speed would have worked well against Toney had Tommy not gone on offense. In reality, I cannot see Tommy fighting James Toney. They were friends and Toney looked up to Tommy. They were never rivals and from different generations really, even though they fought some of the same guys. Dewitt, Barkley etc, but Tommy fought Barkley when Tommy was old when Toney fought him when he was prime.
You kinda cant do that. Because if you did, someone could also say that Tommy would crush Iran Barkley, you know, the same Barkley that Toney beat rather convincingly.
Actually Tommy has a better chance at 160.At 175 he was too stationary for Toney who would get on the inside and win the fight. At 160 it is a 50-50 fight IMO
