On reflection, how do you rate Hatton's performance v Malignaggi?

Wow. They sure had to work hard to milk out two and a half minutes of highlights, then somehow stretch them out to fill six minutes.

I was so disappointed that fight didn't allow Hatton to show what improvements he did/didn't make. He looked a bit off balance and low on defense/head movement/inside work, but it's not like he had the need for any of those things that night. Paulie didn't offer a chance for Hatton to shine and Hatton didn't force Paulie to allow those chances. Incredibly poor tune-up for Pac.

 

i respect hatton's accomplishment in beating paulie so decisively. paulie is a good, not great, vulnerable beltholder-level guy. but i cannot understand all this talk about how ricky rediscovered the slick boxer deep inside in this fight. nonsense. ricky was able to look the boxer against paulie because paulie lacked the firepower to hurt hatton and hatton knew that from the outset. feather fists and a chin that, while good, can be gotten to is a recipe for disaster against a hard hitting, rough fighter who will stay on his man. ricky did a good job of tracking and hounding paulie, but paulie made ricky look like too good of a boxer because he was forever on his back foot and was shy, for good reason, about committing to combos behind the jab.

 

How am I a hater? I've been saying Paulie was overrated for a while. Even before that fight I said Bradley was better than him. I just find it funny that Hatton fans constantly prop up this win buy make excuses for Hatton was justified in never fighting Witter, and I have seen plenty of Hatton fans claim Bradley hasn't proved his worth.

I honestly didnt think Hatton was that good. Malignaggi was diabolical. He didnt do anything after the first round. Hatton was predictable as usual, jumping in with left hooks and jabs because his reach is so poor.

There was no real improvement. I said the same thing immediately after the fight

win or lose against pac I think Hatton should fight bradley next. he'd mug that poor boy in the ring.

 

Paulie was terrible in this fight, whether that's because Hatton made him look bad or he just isn't good enough remains to be seen, i suspect the latter but we'll find out how much Hatton has really improved against Pacquiao.

 

I think he was just happy to get paid. Paulie made no qualms about being out for the money a Hatton fight would bring him, and since he got it, seems like he's on his way out of the sport since he got what he came for. He looked alot better against Cotto, despite Cotto damaging him more, for instance. The only thing it looked like he genuinely wanted to accomplish fight night was lasting the distance.

Another performance that reminded me of was the Sultan vs Wlad fight. Sultan was just happy not to eat too much punishment, get out, and make a fortune, and so that's why he's fallen off the boxing radar since that fight.

 

paulie was scared to throw his right hand, hatton did enough to win. he threw more jabs and he had a little more head movment than in the past but he still leaves himself open for a left hook when he jumps in and throws his own left hook from too far away. counterpunchers are still his cryptonite.

 

At the moment, I kind of think its a better victory now, than I did at the time.

Having re-watched it back-to-back with the Tszyu fight, I thought Hatton did look like a more accomplished fighter against Malignaggi, I thought he had added a bit of tactical thinking and a semi-effective jab to his his game, he never looked not in control and dominaited a guy who others have found it hard to dominate. What it comes down to is; Hatton TKO's the no1 contender. And looks good doing it. Although its true that Malignaggi, didn't turn up, can't blame Hatton for that though.

I Was Very Disapointed with Paulie's Perfomance against Ricky
It was clearly visible that paulie was Terrified to throw his right hand
watchin the box office build up it showed paulie with a ice pack on his hand talkin to buddy.
Then During the Kirkland/vera fight paulie was intervied supprisingly
to him he was listening to his ipod and seemed very quiet.
he was asked about his strategy and he seemed very underconfident
....No Magic Dialouge!!!!!!
Maybe he had hurt his hand or just very nervous?????
I Was Expecting a paulie/cotto performance were he would smash and grab
with ricky i knew he would spoil .....but not that much!!!!
I Thought he would at least make it competitive
but he was clearly there for the Pay-Day:deal
Hatton dominated him BUT paulie wasn't Fighting back
so its hard to say of Ricky's Perfomance
Similaur to oscar not fighting back against Pacman.

Both Ricky and Pac will FIGHT on MAY 2nd
so will be interesting to watch:thumbsup

 

The thing that was noticeable about this fight is because Malignaggi had no power, and no right hand, nothing but a jab infact...Hatton did not need to clinch. The clinch he uses is a defensive move as much as an aggressive one to keep in close, he does not want to be on the outside in most cases for any period of time. However here he really had no need to clinch, so it gave the appearence it was a great boxing display with huge improvements when its probably not the case. He'll revert to type I would think against most opponents.

He did a good job against a B- grade fighter. I'm surprised Malignaggi was ever #1 ranked because he didn't really deserve it in his close wins over certain opponents. There are fighters noticeably better than Malignaggi at this weight.
