Just to be clear about this, and I say this from watching several interviews with Kovlaev that he did recently (building up the Ward rematch fight).

He IS saying he was tired after Round 5 or whatever it was.

However, what he is also saying is that he was overtrained for the fight. This is why you hear him saying things like "I don't know why I trained two or three times per day" for the bout.

Overtraining is a typical thing for athletes who prepare to be at a peak level on a given day. Meaning boxers, combat fighters, wrestlers, etc. Guys who spend months preparing for one outing.

Overtraining has nothing to do with age. Poor stamina, however, does often relate to age or being too old.

So, if Kovalev did overtrain for the first Ward fight, that can be fixed.

On the other hand, if his body is just 'starting to go' and is too old, that can't be fixed.

We'll find out more in the second fight. In Kovalev's mind, he did too much hard preparation for the first fight and when fight night came, he was too sapped in the second half of the fight because of it.

Kovalev had an off day. We will see a different beast in the rematch.

Even on a possible off-day, most people had him winning the fight. He can improve on that performance, as can Ward.

If you look at his media workouts before the fight, you can see he looked quite tired like a guy that may have been over training.

Interesting, I had not noticed that. But I wasn't looking for it, either.

We'll find out more in the rematch.

And as SqauredCircle pointed out, Ward can improve as well. Now Ward knows what he can and cannot do against Kovalev, and that is valuable information.

Kovalev was tired after round 5? First I've heard about it. Certainly didn't look like that on the night. He fought a great fight. With respect to the above comments, nobody beats Ward on an 'off day'. For the record, I scored it 114-113 for Ward but felt that the decision could've went either way. Really looking forward to the rematch.

    ?

I'm trying to clarify what Kovalev, himself, said/feels as regards to being tired in the first fight.

If people think Kovalev is making excuses, that's up to them.

We'll learn more in a few months.

Kovalev has mentioned this in his recent interviews. So I guess, in his mind, he faded after like Round 5 or something.

Harold Lederman had Kovalev winning the fight 116 - 111. Almost everyone had Kovalev winning the fight, SOB lost and he knows it. SOB picked the judges, referee and owns the boxing commission, he refused a rematch unless he could hand pick all three judges once again. SOB does not want neutral judges, not even one! There is an obvious reason for such..............SOB is a damned cheating piece of fecal matter, hell, I rate fecal matter better than SOB! Mayweather not only said that Kovalev won the fight, he also said that Virgil was not a good trainer..............the vast majority of fans had Kovalev winning the fight, even the Ward fans were booing the decision! Vegas judges are crooks, how many bad decision have you seen in Vegas? I have seen way too many over the years.................the mafia used to own Vegas, wonder if they still own Vegas?

Over training or Wards body shots? Kind of a coincidence that the one fight someone works his body, is the one fight Kov "Over trained" and got tired!

I heard that Ward is picking the same judges and ref...How does that make you feel? You feel as if a heavy weight is being pressed down on your shoulders or do you feel that people don't know, see or care about what a miscarriage of justice has taken place and is taken place? If Kovalev loses a decision by robbery again, do you feel as if the only way you can release your rage is by hurting someone both physically and verbally? Explain!!!
