What a performance from the Green Machine destroying the great Roy Jones Jnr in the first round. Green was a 3 to 1 underdog going into the fight. When you beat a legend you become a legend!

I’m not sure which was worse:

    The actual fight.

Or Bernard Hopkins fighting him afterwards, after trying to convince people that it was a bad stoppage.

And Hopkins comment after the Green - Jones fight. " That's why I don't fight in europe". :risas3:

European legends aren't what they used to be.

I remremember watching this one and thinking that the commentators were acting like Green had just beaten a prime Jones Jr...
'To become a legend you have to defeat a legend.'

With the manner in which Green took him apart I think it is fair to say that Green would have beaten any version of Roy Jones.

Green was a terrific fighter. I rate him much higher than Mundine who only beat him because he forced Green to weight drain a ridiculous amount in order to sign off on the fight.

Green was a real tough SOB who always gave a performance.

Green was at super middle his whole career up until the Mundine fight. It was a WBA world title eliminator at Super Middleweight both guys were ranked in the top 10 at the weight. Mundine beat him fair and square.
In saying that I agree Green was a tough SOB I like both him and Mundine.

That right hand would've completely discombobulatized any version of Roy

FTR, that was the first time Roy ever travelled as a pro, after citing getting robbed as an amateur for not having done so prior to that, and he couldn't even make it out of round 1 whilst having to contend with the pressure of being outside his comfort zone on enemy territory and to be fair he got robbed here too - robbed of his senses courtesy of that big right hand from Green which was probably only thrown with 40-50% of full power

Anyone else find it a bit surreal seeing Roy finishing on his feet after getting stopped?

Yep and Roy tried making excuses after saying that Green's hands were illegally wrapped.
I remember Roy's ring walk he was so confident thinking that he was going to embarrass Green on a paid holiday to Australia but instead he felt the thunder from down under.

Yup... don't agree there. Jones Jnr hadnt had a top flight win in 5 years and was already twice KOd. He wasn't even a shadow of a shadow of himself. That's like saying 'based on how Kevin McBride handled Mike Tyson when they fought, it's fair to say he would have beaten any version of Iron Mike.'

Disagree with the comparison Mike had just been stopped by Danny Williams before the McBride fight. Roy was coming off two stoppage wins over Jeff Lacy and Omar Sheika his last loss was a decision to Joe Calzaghe where he dropped Joe in the first round.

 I forget about the hand wrap excuse from Roy. As if anyone would need to wear illegal wraps to shatter that chin

Some fighters just aren't cut out to win on the road or handle the pressure of being inside the lion's den

True, though both Shieka and Lacey were pretty past it themselves at that point (if indeed Lacey, in particular was ever that good). The point is boxing is about timing. And just because two fighters meet at a particular juncture - particularly when one is 'done' at top level - you can't say that the result would always have been the same. History is littered with examples like this. So I think the Tyson comparison is fair. And your original observation was not. Jones Jr had fallen mightily by '09.
