It makes me wonder which of them was on more roids when they fought Green. Roy or Tarver?

All true but Mundine had a much better chin than Roy. And don't anyone dare mention his KO loss to The Phantom because that shot would've sparked out an elephant

I think that Tarver was because at the first press conference he looked like he weighed 250 then easily made weight for the fight he was way bigger than Green.
I remember around the time of Mundine's second reign as WBA super middleweight champ he got made a offer of 1 million to fight Calzaghe which Calzaghe's team probably thought was a fair offer they didn't realize the PPV money Choc was making in Australia so the fight never happened. Calzaghe would have won if they fought but I reckon prime Anthony would've given him some problems and pinched a few rounds he was probably the only guy at 168 that could match Joe's hand speed at the time.

    I think Tarver popped dirty x 2

Cool, I didn't actually know that despite the fact I'm a walking Calzaghe encyclopedia and have forgotten more about boxing than most will ever know. I used to be an avid boxing magazine reader

    Would've been a fun fight

I know that Calzaghe and Mundine had at least 2 common opponents in Kessler and Thornberry. Obviously Kessler beat Mundine on points and Joe beat Kessler. Rick Thornberry was a tough Queenslander I remember when he fought Mundine they were talking about how Thornberry went 12 rounds with Joe because Mundine v Thornberry was a big fight up in Queensland at the time and Mundine stopped Thornberry with a body shot in the 11th round.

Yes I remember Thornberry and he was tough and gritty

He also fought The Phantom and the savage hooker Henry Wharton

Kessler flew all the way over to Mundine's backyard for his first defence of his world title. I always respected him for that.

Yeah Thornberry was tough I remember the Aussie media accusing Mundine of ducking him and Thornberry went into the ring after one of Mundine's fights and challenged him so it was a big domestic fight in Australia at the time.

Yep Kessler another warrior not scared to go on the road I read Kessler saying that Calzaghe was the best all around guy he fought but he said Mundine had the best jab he ever faced.

Aussie domestic dust ups are similar to British ones: Real man business

    Correct

    BEST SKILL
    Joe Calzaghe
: I think Calzaghe had a lot of skills. Froch had different skills. He’s slow but he’s strong and has long arms and he’s mentally strong. Ward was also very good. It’s difficult to just point out one. I had (Librado) Andrade for 12 rounds, he came [at you] all the time; you couldn’t keep him away. It was like a nightmare. I think when you get to the top we all have different skills but, If I had to pick, I would say Joe Calzaghe had the best skills.

    BEST JAB
    Anthony Mundine:
I would say in my last fight it was Froch, he had a good jab. Joe Calzaghe had a good jab. But Anthony Mundine had the best jab. He was smart with how he used it.

    BEST DEFENSE
    Andre Ward:
Ward had a defense where he threw one punch and he holds you. That’s his defense. That’s the best I’ve seen. But it ruins the fight. I would say Librado Andrade; he could slip the punches, I’d never seen anything like that before.

    BEST CHIN
    Librado Andrade:
He had the best chin. I hit him so much … but he could take a punch. Of course, Froch, he can take a pretty good punch.

    BEST PUNCHER
    Carl Froch:
Ward, he didn’t really hit hard. Froch hit hard. Joe didn’t hit hard. If I had to choose someone, I choose Froch. He is a hard puncher when he hits you with a punch but he’s slow.

    FASTEST HANDS
    Joe Calzaghe:
Either Joe or Ward. There were too many years between fighting them but I would probably say Joe.

    FASTEST FEET
    Ward
: Good question. I think Ward had the fastest feet. He kept out the way and made full use of the ring.

    SMARTEST
    Calzaghe
: I would say Ward was clever. He stuck to his plan. So did Joe. [Calzaghe] was afraid of me. I remember that. But he got hit and he changed his plans against me [in the middle of the fight].

    STRONGEST
    Andrade:
He came [at me] for 12 rounds. I never fought anyone like that. Even Froch is strong and he’s a strong finisher but Andrade … I’ll never forget that fight. I had to keep him away all the time. Very strong.

    BEST OVERALL
    Calzaghe
: He’s gonna read it, that son of a *****! (Laughs.) I would say the best fighter and mentality, the build-up, the nice guy, is Joe. He inspired me. I came strong, I was young, I hadn’t lost a fight. Overall I would say he wasn’t the best puncher. He’s fast and he punched with the inside of his gloves but he was good at it.

Great and balanced summary from Kessler.
Yep I love the domestic dust ups there is always a feel in the air when they are on it's beautiful. Like you said real mans business.
Mundine never shied away from them having fought Green, Geale, Soliman, Thornberry even fighting Marc Bagero for the Aussie title in his 5th fight was big.
Surprisingly Green didn't have as many domestic rivals apart from Mundine and early on when he destroyed Jason Delisle and of course he had the Paul Briggs farce. Geale had a few with Mundine, Dawson and Fletcher but I am surprised that Geale and Soliman never fought.

Thanks mate. I’ll have to go back and have a look but my recollection was that Green had to drain heavily. Tellingly he moved up to light heavyweight next fight and never dropped back down.

Agree Mundine won the fight fair and square but it was one of the rare times Green looked listless. Maybe the weight cutting had something to do with it, maybe not. In any case he took the fight so any excuse is pure conjecture on my part.

Roy was done at the elite level before Calzaghe, and he was like 41 here. I don't think it's fair at all. The quality of these posts are questionable

Jones was still a big name with many fans. An old ass Hopkins could dominate shot lethargic Roy, that let's me know he was worlds away from his prime

A fine line up of Aussie warriors

The British and Aussie domestic circuits are for fans of manly boxing, warriors, exciting action packed fights, power punching, big hearts, stout chins and for those of us sports fans who prefer to stay away from start to finish when we're watching sports.

    Yes that is surprising
