Rocky Marciano knocked out Jersey Joe Walcott to win the heavyweight title. A title reign and a lot of discussions on the internet later, here we are. I think Marciano is one of the more divisive figures in the game, and so is at once overrated and underrated. He deserves credit for what he did and is I think firmly in the upper echelon of heavyweight champs, but wow do some get carried away with the idolatry.
Pulitzer Prize winning sports writer Red Smith said this about Marciano: "In one respect...he had no challenger. He was the toughest...strongest...most dedicated fighter who ever wore gloves!" "Fear wasn't in his vocabulary...and pain had no meaning!"
Marciano was an all-time great, very entertaining, a fan favourite and a man's man. No-one, no matter how hard they might try, can change that.
