It was crazy how Schmeling kept spamming that right hand, delaying the explosions of The Brown Bomber's hands multiple times with his counter, yet Louis kept standing until 11.
A superb, IMO underrated prize fighter came up with a plan and stood there and showed guts by executing it. An ATG who’d gotten too full of himself got a very valuable and needed wake-up call.
My man Max just put a clinic on how planning and preparation are the key to winning. Ironically, this defeat was somehow a waking call for Louis who until then was kinda a cocky, immature and relaxed wonder boy. Back then US was still racially segregated, so for black people Louis was much more than a sport idol, he was a living symbol of victory over racial discrimination and prejudice. IIRC when Louis saw how devastating his defeat was for black people, how much disappointment he had brought to his people, he felt deeply ashamed and amended his ways, becoming a serious and focused fighter looking for redemption, which achieved when he avenged his defeat to Max.
Monumental win for Schmeling. Etched a place in history forever with it. Imo the best win in the division’s history considering Louis would retire at 60-1.
The GOAT showed he was human, and got his butt handed to him in that fight, but showed a lot of intestinal fortitude in the process.
Joe had been half-assed training, playing too much golf and screwing half the female population of Harlem. He'd gotten too full of himself. Losses hurt, but he made this one constructive. And he made Max pay a couple of years later, although the heat surrounding that which led to Joe trying to kill him involved more than just revenge, with all the stuff circulating around the fight. I've often wondered if Hitler and the Nazis had never existed, that fight would still be so memorable today. And when the fighting was done, they were tight to the point where, as we know, Max helped Joe out financially when Joe was having troubles, chipped in on Joe's funeral and helped carry him to his gravesite.
Those right hands he was being hit with… Schemling was punching him with full leverage, Louis didn’t give up on his plan but Schemling was too clever and hit like death.
Good reminder that Schmeling at his peak beats nigh every heavyweight ever, move over Evander. Even if this isn't a prime verison of the Bomber, still a monstrous win.
