No matter what strategy Frazier employed Foreman was always going top beat him whether it be at long range ,mid range, or inside. Frazier tried to mix it up in their second fight ,and succeeded in surviving a bit longer but won nothing.
Ali's trainer discovered the ropes were loose on the afternoon of the fight and, along with Bobby Goodman cut them and made the shorter he also tightened them as much as he could, as he was concerned Ali might fall out of the ring.Nobody, including Ali knew he was going to employ the rope a dope strategy.
