On this day, March 2 1975, Roberto Duran kayos Lightning Ray Lampkin. Roberto Duran kayos Ray Lampkin in round 14, to defend his WBA Lightweight Title in Panama City, Panama, your thoughts?
It will be a while till I get to that one, but I seem to remember it being a good match. Lampkin largely fought Duran on his own terms, doing pretty well, and lasted longer than any of Duran's opponents up to that point, even surpassing DeJesus.
I remember this fight as very competitive, but Duran kept tagging Ray Lampkin under the heart when they were infighting, this wore Lampkin down as the end approached. Duran struck Lampkin to the body, then the right hand to the jaw. When Ray hit the canvas, his head bounced, he suffered a concussion. After the bout, Roberto said that he was not in shape but that if they fight again, he would be sending Lampkin to the morgue the next time instead of the dressing room. The fight was televised on ABC's Wide World Of Sports.
"I wasnt in my best condition. Today i sent him to the hospital next time i send him to the morgue." Duran after the fight.
I was not shocked by that comment from Hands Of Stone, when he said that. Typical Duran back then. I remember my classmates and I talking about the fight in my Home Economics class, known as Bachelor Survival to us guys. Lightning Ray Lampkin was the U. S Lightweight Champion, there used to be televised tournaments.
I watched this the other night. Very fun fight, and brutal, brutal knockout. Lampkin reminded me of Freddie Pendleton in a way. Tall, rangy, all over the place with a good 1-2. Swapped speed for power. Was Duran's leg which was injured? I remember him being quite plodding and slow on the front-foot. I had it 7-6 Duran headed into the final round.
I've watched it a few times but I don't think I've ever scored it. I'm not sure why Duran wasn't in shape but he looks really skinny in that fight.
I do not recall if Duran had injured his leg but Roberto did look frustrated at first, but he did land some heavy shot on the inside. It was a very good fight, that final right hand was a thing of beauty.
He was still a lightweight, the WBA champion at 135 lbs, I guess many are used to seeing him as a heavier looking fighter at 160lbs, I followed his fights since he won the lightweight title from Ken Buchanan in 1972.
No, sorry, I meant it in relation to his lightweight days. He looked skinnier than he did when he fought Esteban DeJesus in their title fight rematch the previous year.
