For those in the Holyfield-Bonavena thread who persist in underrating Oscar, watch this fight between Frazier and Bonavena...and I know that Frazier and Holy have different styles...irrelevant...the point is that Bonavena was a better fighter than some of you give him credit for being.

In both their fights, Ringo lost, but he did so many things well at the same time. Unlike so many of Joe's opponents who were ko'ed, or butchered ala Chuvalo or methodically and inexorably battered, like Quarry, Oscar had some inside knowledge as to how to fight Smokin' Joe. An underrated sense of distance, equally underrated defensive skills and crude, but somehow effective survivalist skills...aided, abetted and enhanced by Oscar's formidable physical strength and toughness and a Gene Fullmerish type of "Plan B" consisting of a backpedalling, sneaky kind of pseudo-cleverness and dare I say it, "boxing skill"...of which the straight ahead, unimaginative Chuvalo, and even Quarry were unable to muster in their meetings with Frazier. All of this, in fairness, was more in evidence vs Frazier, than against a sharp shooter like Jimmy Ellis, who looked far better vs Oscar than did Frazier....and to an extent, even more so than Ali (until that 15th round)..
Just my rather limited 0.02 cents, as my buddy @jowcol is famed for saying. I encourage your opinions and comments regarding the always awkwardly dangerous force called Oscar Ringo Bonavena...who was certainly more than the glorified Ron Stander type as so wrongly typecast by so many posters.

I agree wholeheartedly. Ringo fought in possibly the toughest era in heavyweight history while it was loaded with greats and neargreats. Holyfield could lose to Bonavena Bonavena. Frazier would ground bodybuilder boy to dust in 7. Foreman KO 3. Ali dec or late tko. Quarry by dec or late KO. NORTON BY DEC. SHAVERS BY KO or gets ko'd. Lyle by KO. Holyfield was not a great puncher had no great defense, has his entire rep on beating an old overrated weakheart THUG named Tyson (who NEVER rose to meet the challenge in a tough even fight, yet is lauded by his lunatic fringe ladogs as DEMPSEY Liston Louis Frazier combined when history proved he was not). Overrated era late 80s-2000s and WAY overrated heavyweights

Bonavena thought Ali would beat Frazier in the FOTC. Joe, up to Kingston Jamaica, was on top....in his era.

Then Ali couldn't have been as good as most people thought he was since Frazier beat him and gave him living hell in Manilla..

Most times ali is overrated, but he also just struggle with left hookers, bad style match up for him

I appreciate the quality content you put out there, red cobra. Sometimes this place is a real "dead zone".

    How you been lately?

I really appreciate that Russell ...and I've been ok...hope you've been too. After trying (mostly unsuccessfully) to stir up classic boxing interest in another celebrated "boxing" site, it's good to have a rapport with kindred spirits here like yourself and some others. Again, just part of sharing that old 2 cents of mine.

Oscar was certainly a character in and out of the ring. Tough man.

It's a shame the heavyweight division doesn't have anyone in it at the moment like Bonavena. I'd love to watch someone like him go through the modern heavyweight scene, causing hell one way or another the entire time.

Russell: is that a photo of Olivares & Arguello in your avatatar? I watched their title fight recently.. Alexis was WAY behind in the fight until he wins by k.o. in the 13th. Just a couple of heavy punches did the deed.

Yes, it's them. Lovely picture isn't it?

Olivares deserves all the credit in the world for his performance well outside of his optimal weight class against a great fighter himself in Arguello, who had almost 5 inches of height on Olivares and a full five inches in reach. Makes you wonder how a younger, fresher Olivares who didn't have 80 fights to his name might have done.

We saw one of todays supposed best fighters try to move up two weight classes at an advanced age just this past weekend... He didn't quite put in an Olivares like performance, to say the least.
