Boy oh boy did those good old boys dread seeing Pavlik get taken to school last night, and instead of heaping praise for one of the most fantastic boxing exhibitions displayed by a senior of the sweet science -- a demonstrably one-sided beatdown facilitated to a hungry wolf SEVENTEEN ****ing years Hopkins' junior -- our esteemed panel of experts decided to morosely scratch their beards over why their great white hype was floundering like a Great White whale in the center of the ring.

It's pretty sad, really. Hopkins deserved much, much more praise for his performance.

He did deserve better from the announcers. But it's all water under the bridge now. BHop got what he deserved, KP got what he deserved, and those "experts" got what they deserved. Everyone knows how biased they can be.

I thought HBO gave Hopkins a lot of credit. I don't get where you're coming from.

After the fight. During they seemed reluctant until very deep in the fight.

Agreed. Unfortunately, athletes like Hopkins will be appreciated when they retire. Instead of recognizing his great contribution to the sport there are those that will continuously demean his accomplishments either because of resentment (some bone to pick), or plain green eyed jealousy.

I would like to have heard the HBO commentary. Did Lampley start crying again?

You're probably right. I had people over so I really couldn't hear what they were saying during the fight.

Another ESB commentor so blinded by his own predjudices that he sees racial conspiracy everywhere. Just enjoy the great win and try not to play pop-sociologist.

And by the way, if you're going to suggest that others are racist, it's best not to use racial language yourself in your argument. (white hype/white whale)

It was pretty obvious from my vantage point that Lampley and Merchant were very disappointed Kelly didn't live up the hype. I mean, you've heard Lampley when he's excited, and he sure as hell didn't sound enthused for Bernard, which by all accounts is the type of Storybook victory he usually would bust a nut all over.

Great thread. The HBO (Hate Bernard Obsessively) network crew was aghast at Hopkins' ass-kicking of their new house fighter, and the bitching was ridiculous. Hey HBO, Bernard OWNED you last night, and punked you and DiBella out for the Taylor BS and all the hate you've spewed towards him time after time.

That was one of the best aspects of what happened last night, the clowning of HBO by Hopkins. Very well-deserved, and years in the making. BHop clowned Pavlik, HBO and all the boxing media in one fell swoop. And that's a big part of why he was so emotional after the fight -- sweet payback and justice.

I can see both sides. HBO wasn't as bad as I would have expected, but they were doing alot of the head scratching the author of this thread has referred to while it was going on.

$$$. It's all about money. HBO stood to make a small fortune off of Pavlik's continued dominance. HBO just lost out on a lot of future revenue .

Maybe you misinterpreted my post. It had nothing to do with hopkins being black, purple, pink, white, yellow, or whatever. It had everything to do with Kelly being the young rising star, and Bernard being the old, not-as-commercially viable option to sell PPVs. And yes, to say a little of Pavlik's allure is because he's a white American isn't too absurd either.

Read ocelot's post. If they're disappointed, it's merely because Pav could represent a future money earner for HBO. But I didn't hear much grumbling from HBO.

Manny was heaping praise all over the place, while pointing to Pav's limited style.

Lampley called it the greatest win of age over youth since Forman/Moorer (and maybe even better) He hit that point several times.

Merchant seemed unusually complementary in his interview with Hop after the fight. I just don't see the conspiracy here.

Bhop :boxxKelly Pavlik's head off. He made a statement whether anybody liked it or not.
