Let’s face it. Heavyweights being called Cruiserweight is just plain wrong. And Superheavyweights being called “heavyweights” is just plain wrong too. The divisions above Lightheavyweight need relabelled Since it is called “light heavyweight”, There should be nothing between Light heavyweight and heavyweight. No new weight class. Nothing was ever needed there. the next weight up from LH should be called heavyweight. Not Cruiserweight. micheal Spinks and Roy Jones did not need it. The new weight should have been SHW. And pro boxing should never have begun calling traditional sized Heavyweights dog gone Cruiserweight ! biggest disaster of all time was inventing “cruiserweight”. Therefore, bigger than “light” Heavyweight is “actual ” heavyweight. not cruiser. Amatuer boxing got this right. They realise above light heavyweight you can only ever have heavyweight. what the Olympics got right was adding a new division called Super heavyweight, separate from heavyweight, for the new sized athletes who (thanks to modern training) could now compete at top level as boxers. so Cruiserweight should be called Heavyweight.
Not one bit. If he’s good enough he’s big enough. okolie is a heavyweight. everything above LH is a heavyweight. If he won’t fight heavyweights called Cruiserweights then he can stay at lightheavyweight. He’s entitled to do that.
I think the only weight class innovation that was a good decision, was the cruiserweight divison. Every other Super- weight division wasnt needed, and it made the talent pool of every traditional weight class weaker.
I don’t agree with your overall assessment of the divisions and the name is just the name, but they should bring back SHW for sure to prevent these size mismatches at HW
Saying that inventing cruiserweights is the biggest disaster of all-time my be a bit overly dramatic but I do see your point. If you don't want cruiserweight, at what weight would you start the super heavyweight division?
Selective I would think, in order to determine that, one has to decide where and how to place some of the Lineal Champions from the past, such as Jess Willard and Primo Carnera. That requires a lot of thought.
