Once and for all - OBJECTIVELY, why did Cotto vs. Martinez play out as it did?

The knee had a part to play in the temple shot landing. The temple shot is why Sergio never recovered.

So, kind of a Holt vs. Torres rematch kind of situation?

The butt set up the KO punch? (although it was the punch that did the KO damage, not the butt)

I had forgotten about that fight. A crazy round. If I remember rightly, wasn't their first fight a bit crazy with the Columbian home crowd throwing things at Holt whilst he was in the ring/walking to the ring?

Anyway, yeah, a bit like their rematch.

    62-38

62 ~ martinez being an old rickity fighter trying to still fight with an athletic based style, whos body was so worn he never fought again.

38 - cotto being a strong, precise puncher with deceiving speed.

Cotto is KOd in my opinion if he fought any version of the martinez at 154 and middleweight up until the murray fight.

I would pick williams, pavlik, murray and even macklin (the versions martinez fought ) to beat the sergio that cotto did.

Martinez said before the fight that he was not able to run and barely walk etc .

Its pretty obvious that with his style that was goin to happen once he gets in the ring again with injuries that never healed or will never heal at all now.

He just cashed in against the highest bidder,Cotto i guess in this case.Nor Mayweather or Pacman wanted the fight at any catchweight. It makes me wonder why he didnt go with Canelo or Golovkin, may be less money.

I say the left hand didn't help and is separate from the injuries but his knees made it impossible to mount enough of a comeback as the fight wore on, I am a very ardent supporter of 'Maravilla wasn't half the fighter he was even from the Murray fight' but I also give Cotto credit for executing the gameplan.

I think sergio wasn't 100% but I think he figured whatever % he was he could handle cotto easily. He underestimated Cotto.

    Let's be real.

Cotto threw a meaty left hook to Martinez's temple which had an ample amount of energy also known as "ki". The force of that hook was so great, that Martinez busted his ankles.

Cotto has done this move before, see the Foreman fight. He's didn't shave his head bald for no reason. These are the secret techniques of Cotto's Shaolin Monk training.

    This seems probable. :nod

Especially if he was basing his arrogant presumption of being able to "pull the wool over everyone's peepers" on watching tape of Trout vs. Cotto and noting that a bit of movement gave Junito fits...he probably felt that even knowing his own unique brand of movement (shuffling flat-footed in a speedy manner, as opposed to more traditional up-on-your-toes movement) was heavily diminished, he could just scuff and drag around the ring and still be too quick based on his upper body reflexes (the remnants of which he probably overestimated) and his counter-punch timing ability (in which he probably ALSO had too much faith,

Martinez fought a much quicker guy than Cotto, in P. Williams. Not only that, he also gave up a considerable reach advantage to Paul, and still managed to avoid all the bombs his faster, taller adversary threw. The key was distance and anticipation - Martinez was good at moving himself out of harm's way, flat-footed or not. Once the knee went out, he became MUCH more economical with his movements, so that he wouldn't strain his knee unless he absolutely had to. The result of that was evident in the Cotto fight - Martinez basically stood in a way of a hook. Martinez without his legs is like Floyd without his shoulders - anyone would be able to knock him out, as evident by the fights against the brits, where he went life and death with opponents that he would normally demolish.

PTP was a volume guy. His offensive firepower (a few random nights aside, where he did one-hit lower-tier opponents, like Kolle) really isn't comparable with post-Roach Cotto's.
