Once and for all - OBJECTIVELY, why did Cotto vs. Martinez play out as it did?

I think as the fight progressed the injury came more into play. But from the offset Cotto jumped on him, Martinez never recovered after rd 1

Probably more to do with the injury but I'm not sure even a prime Martinez could beat this Cotto.

    This Cotto is looking amazing.

I think it would have been an extremely close fight if it was prime vs Cotto (now).

    Cotto havin a gay son
    A ***y wife

    A bald head

All of these things messed with martinez equilibrium

Yes but that hardly contradicts what I said. Martinez was able to avoid bombs of a volume puncher, he certainly would be able to avoid carefully picked shots of Cotto, given that Cotto's arms are considerably shorter, and he is slower than Williams. No knee = no ability to maintain beneficial distance = game over Maravilla.

Sergio and his knee were completely unprepared for THAT Cotto.

I agree, but also have to call into play Cotto's timing. Slower the Williams, but with much better timing.

100% knee and anyone that argues different is just wrong. Anyone who saw Sergio previously could easily see he was a shell of his former self. He looked absolutely awful from the opening bell.

From the opening bell, though, or from Cotto's temple shot? :think

    When'd you last watch it?

Was both... but Miguel Cotto is arguably the best fighter he was ever in the ring with.

I'd like to see them prime for prime.. but Martinez that was 154 and Cotto was 140.. though people might argue it was 147.. but I think he was most dominant at 140.

    From the temple shot.

I think people need to watch it over again.

There's little doubt that Sergio wasn't 100%, there's even less doubt that everyone, including Sergio underestimated the Cotto that stepped into the ring that night. In my humble opinion, if Cotto does not land that left hook shortly into that first round, Sergio would not have gone down three times. He would have however still lost every round on points. Cotto was faster, punched harder and had the better plan. In the middle rounds Sergio did well enough in avoiding many of Cottto's punches, hell he even sprinted halfway across the ring when Cotto turned his back. In conclusion, was his knee 100%, no. But did that hook take him completely out of his game plan and take away what chance he had, yes.
