Lineal champion has great prestige but doesn't always mean highest ranked.

Look no further than the Flyweight title when Jaro scored an all time upset over Wonjongkam and then Igarashi beat Jaro. Igarashi had the almighty crown but few ranked him #1.

He would be the lineal middleweight champion, marking his second division to do so. That will be great for him. But for me, personally, to be worthy of creating a thread titling someone "THEE MAN @" a specific division, they better be lineal champion and have cleared out a good bit of the top competition unless there is nobody of any relevant note to face beyond who they have. Or have fought a continuous wave of top 10 guys. That will not be the case for Alvarez, who is facing his first ranked Middleweight ever in Cotto (although a good opponent, ranked no lower than 2nd in the division). We'll see what he does if he brings the title home.

 

I don't think Canelo would duck GGG. He has a history of taking fights that everyone said he wouldn't take. This should be reason enough to hope he takes out the preening Puerto Rican diva.

 

Exactly, he would be lineal but only casuals and those who don't know anything about boxing would consider him The Man in the division after one fight at 155.

As far as I am concerned no-one is The Man at MW until the Cotto/Canelo winner faces Golovkin, though GGG would still be the front runner for the position.

Unfortunately not sure how/when this will happen due to good old boxing politics.
