He had five KO 1 losses before fighting Leonard and Hagler.

Because he wasn't an elite fighter.

“Although Joe's greatness in many areas is well acknowledged, his chin is generally underrated. This is particularly true in comparison with Jack Dempsey but also in general evaluations. Louis's chin seemed indestructible up to and including his toe-to-toe thrashing of hard-hitting, iron-jawed Max Baer. But after power-hitting Max Schmeling stopped him in 12 rounds with an almost limitless number of deadly rights (Max is said to have stated that he'd never seen anyone take suchpunishment) Joe seems to have lost a little durability. Still, his chin remained solid. The men who would later floor him(Jimmy Braddock, Tony Galento, Buddy Baer, Jersey Joe Walcott and Rocky Marciano) were all excellent to great hitters."

What do you think? Are you inclined to agree?

He wasn’t an iron-chinned fighter who lost his durability, which is what this is about.

He’s a guy that started average or maybe even a bit below but put things together for a period of time and was able to hang with Leonard (granted a welter but an elite talent) and Hagler (an elite talent) and gave both of them fits, took rounds and without question was ahead of Hagler until Marvin rallied late. No shame in that.

Absolutely. Many considered it the best chin in boxing for some time.

Oh absolutely even when things got through his excellent science he took shots very, very well. Every time he gets dropped he had the uncommon ability to be clear headed on the rise. I suppose nothing makes you more alert then being dropped by someone you were meant to steam roll but courage does things even to those in the face of absolute adversity. I love how when he gets dropped there is no urgency he gets sharper his eyes narrow and he waits knowing he can close the show the second he sees his mark like a sniper under gun fire he sits poised waiting then just takes his shot when he sees the whites in there eyes (Figuratively of course lol) he always needed a beating to go down because despite his persona he was supremely confident and never felt like he was in a losing fight till the the bell rang and then and only then did the sniper feel like he lost his target.

Joe was usually the guy who was pressing the fight, taking chances. That's when he would leave openings occasionally. Overall his chin was very strong as well as his ability to recover was above average.

Joe had a good chin, you really had to beat him up (Even past his prime) to get the knockout. He has taking some powerful shots as Heavyweight Champ, and when knock down always did get back up.

Max Baer post Louis .. his post Louis career was against extremely weak opposition as they lobbied him to second title match but he was twice thrashed by Nova, a good but far from great fighter , while he himself was still a relatively young man ..
