Yeah, the idea of weighted pull ups feels safer to me than one handed pullups. As far as progressive training for one armed pull ups, I am wondering how much of the movement is core strength most. I say this because balance seems so important with any type of exercise such as this, pistols, one hand pushups, etc? I genuinely do not know. Just a question.

If I was going for a one-armed pullup, negatives, holds, and partial reps would factor heavily into the training.

Weighted pullups would be good too. As would supplemental training with weights

Funny you should say that, I'm coming off a really low base with normal pull ups (5) and last week my mate bet me I wouldn't be able to do a one armed pull-up within 12 months (1st Feb 2012). I had been drinking and stupidly accepted.

My first goal is 15 standard pull-ups, then the same weighted (I think maybe 30kg). If I can achieve this within around 6 months, that gives me 6 months to progress to one arm.

The problem is everyone at my gym says I'm too heavy for it(85 kg), so I think I might need to lose a stone aswell.

Strength as well if you train incorrectly or lose too much weight.

Stupidly accepted? You say it like that's difficult. 12 months to be able to do a single one armed pull-up? Easily done.

Easily done if he has the drive and work ethic for it.

    This.

Who trains specifically to do one arm chin-ups? Nobody. I've heard people say they train to do OAC's but all they do is attempt to do a few at the end of their workout and that's it. If you train purely to be able to do a one arm chin-up it shouldn't take too long to get to the point you can do at least one.

Nope, doesn't work that way unfortunately.

Even with a one handed pullup, you're using more than just that half of your body to make it happen. Same with one handed pushups - I can do them easy but there aint no way I'm benching 140kg anytime soon.

I disagree. It's achievable, as I said - but not easy. I'm basically starting from scratch.

I could do 2 good form 1 arm chin ups when I weighted 140lbs. Just tried to do one now but form was terrible had to raise my knees to help me get my chin up to the bar. Really have to shed the 10lbs I have put on since christmas.

Never really trained to do them but I do weighted pull ups with 20kg and I guess that helps.
