It can go both ways. It can either be a greater fighter struggling with the particular style of a lesser fighter, or the lesser fighter's maximal (maybe supramaximal) potential brought out by a guy who's number he has. Either way, its an isolated event/person which is why we call it "having their number"
I take "fighter A has fighter B's number" to mean that no matter how many times they fought, fighter A would win. Marquez is currently 0-2-1 against Pacquiao in 3 fights, so saying Marquez has Pac's number doesn't even make sense. Continually having very close fights that are open to interpretation with someone is NOT "having their number". Vernon Forrest had Shane Mosley's number. :deal
Ahhh I see , Well then I would say that regardless of size , speed , punching power and ring IQ a fighter will always beat you, as in Saddler vs Pep?
Hearns-Duran. Both are ATGs, but Hearns is/was/will always be a horrible matchup for Duran. Pacquiao-Barrera Marquez-Pacquiao Mayorga-Forrest Norton-Ali Barkley-Hearns
Didn't mean it as in Taylor would always beat Hopkins and comfortably wins. I meant it in the sense that B Hop had dominated every opponent he faced since RJJ and Taylor came a long and gave him a real problem despite being the standard of fighter that shouldn't have troubled a fairly prime B Hop. And about the scoring, everyone's got their own opinion and I think most people on ESB forget that. Just because someone sees something differently to you, it doesn't give you the right to attack them, unless their a trolling ****
Pacquiao & Marquez have styles that pretty much neutralise each other. They mesh in a way that will mean if they have 100 times, 100 of them will be close fights. That isn't "having a guys number" at all. Having a guys number is having the ability to beat the other guy regardless of whether there is a big gulf in ability or physical ability. It's just when a style matches really badly for one fighter where they will pretty much lose to that opponent every time.
Jones was shot against Tarver but beat him clearly first time, Marquez was either better than Pacquaio or his equal. Honestly usually to have a guys number you have to be good enough in the first place to have his number
