Considering the history of their rivalry, how close their fights have always been and the skill level of these fighters, surely this fight has to go down as one of the greatest in the modern era of boxing?
It was the most exhilarating fight I've ever seen. That's probably more because of the story of the individuals involved and the lead-up than because of the action, but it was still an absolute war. In fact, I might take that back, even my friends who were casual fans were blown away by the action and the atmosphere it created. One of the best, for sure.
There really wasn't that much action in this fight let's be honest. Less action than the last fight yet Marquez and PAC were both able to score knockdowns when rarely anything meaningful had landed throughout the fight. But seeing PAC on his back them on his front will be boxing gold in years to come. I actually had Marquez behind before the stoppage thought he was to tentative and was going to lose a wide decision if he didn't start pressing more of the action. Glad he left it out of the judges hands. Marquez Boxing impressed me more in the last fight but his heart Impressed me in this one.
In pure action, it's no Hagler-Hearns for sure. It was more a technical kind of action like the 2nd fight, but in terms of drama.... damn. 1 KD each, Marquez getting all bloodied and then coming up with that counter punch from hell and Pac getting KTFO like that. I've never watched a fight like this live, it's unreal to watch it unfold in front of you (on my tv screen at least)
I think there was definitely more action in this fight than the last. But I agree, Marquez was using angles and boxing better in the last fight. I think he came in with the sole intention of stopping Manny.
I think that's also because Pacquiao was more effective offensively tonight (outside of the KO obv) and resulted in Marquez having a tougher time initially. I wonder if he fought toe to toe with Pac in the 5th (which was a strange thing for him to do) to lure Pac into becoming more reckless...
I'm pretty confident up to that point Marquez had threw and connected less punches than he did last time round:think
Three what? Marquez definitely landed more over 12 in fight 3. Pac was definitely having more success with his offense. A mix of him coming in well-prepared, and JMM seemingly having limited his mobility. If JMM really did do that **** to entice him into walking into something like that, he's a bona fide genius.
It's easy to get carried away in the immediate aftermath but I remember feeling similar to right after Cotto-Margarito 1. But remember Hagler-Hearns is a tad overrated as well,so I think this fight deserves it's "unforgettable" tag. The fact Juanma was prepared to risk it like that just because he wanted to leave it in no doubt definitely contributed to the thrilling nature of the fight. And fair play to Manny as well.
I think in terms of just being drama filled action packed fights, there are a lot of better fights (Cotto-Marg, Vasquez-Marquez etc) For me it's the context of the fight that makes it amazing. We're talking about 2 fighters who are at the absolute top tier of boxing and have been for a long time, ending a series of fights where despite having fougth 36 rounds, a clear winner was not established. And then ending it in a fight that saw each fighter knocked down and one fighter knocked out cold... I doubt you'll see anything like this in a long long time.
Yeah...I'd definitely include it on a list of all time great fights if only because it was so dramatic and because it contained so many shifts of momentum. It may not have contained the same type of sustained fury as the Alvarado-Rios fights, but it was fought at a faster than expected pace and featured some impressive burst of violence in just about every round. Plus, it had a wicked and unexpected ending that no one is likely to forget. Methinks it's Fight of the Year in a year that's contained a number of terrific battles.
I see where you're coming from and I agree. One of the greatest, sure esp. when you take it within the context of their rivalry. In terms of action and drama, Chico-Corrales I still trumped this though.
