Michael Gerard Tyson is a 5'10 Heavyweight with a 50-6-2 44 KO's 5 KO losses. Born on June 30, 1966 in Brooklyn, New York. He's been inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame and the World Boxing Hall of Fame and was one of the hardest puncher's in the history of the Heavyweight Division. As a child Mike Tyson made me a devout fan of Boxing, before Tyson I vaguely remember since I was only about 5 or 6 all of the pomp and circumstance around Leonard vs Duran, Hearns, and Hagler. And while I recall watching and enjoying the matches it was Mike and his brutal knockout power that really sucked me in as a Action movie loving kid, Mike just obliterated people, he truly was a badass of the highest order. So being someone who craved seeing pure unadulterated violence he was a perfect fit for me. I got Mike Tyson's Punch-Out for Christmas for the ancient original Nintendo when I was 8 in 1988 and played it constantly for about 3 years straight as well as Mario Bros.

I didn't understand the significance of any of his wins at the time I just knew he was fun to watch, because everytime he stepped in the ring you knew something really violent was about to take place, you were gonna see somebody get KTFO. And because of that I'll never forget my shock and the looks of absolute shock on the faces of the kids the next day at school after Buster Douglas knocked him out, it was a truly jaw dropping moment, we couldn't believe it, and it taught me to never believe the hype, no matter how unstoppable you think you're favorite fighter is ...he's not. Then a year later the sideshow started the Desiree Washington rape trial and imprisonment, the Mike Tyson-Robin Givens joint interview on 20/20 with Barbara Walters, the Holyfield ear-biting incident, the whole thing was surreal as hell, seeing my hero being torn down by the media was at the same time confusing, frustrating and fascinating and in my opinion alongside the OJ Murder Trial basically gave birth to the 24hr a day scandal obsessed media culture that we have today. By then my image of Tyson had completely changed from the Super Hero KO machine to a flawed borderline maniac that was beyond redemption. But thankfully Mike has somehow someway found a way back from the brink of total destruction or Bolivian as he once said, and has finally seemed to get his head on straight and found order amongst the chaos of his life. While I usually hold people's personal foibles against them, Mike I truly believe was mentally ill, not that that excuses anything but he was barely in control of himself at the time, and seems to be truly sorry for what he's done in the past.

A lot of you younger fans, don't have a true understanding of what the Rise and Fall Of Mike Tyson meant in the sport and to the world, he was a megastar, a type of stardom that you don't see now days, he transcended the sport and was as well known world wide as Justin Bieber or Lady Gaga actually probably more so, he was the Heavyweight Champion of the World when it really meant something. Back then there was no internet, no iPhones, no Youtube, you sat in front of the TV and waited for crazy stuff to happen and Mike provided the crazy for quite awhile. Now days you have a scandal a week with the Ray Rice's and Donald Sterling's of the world but none of them stick with you, you forget them the next week, well that wasn't the case back then, there wasn't a media conjured storm of controversy every other day it was about one a year, and Mike provided plenty of excitement for us fans and the media in and out of the ring. So for all you doubters and haters please watch and try to understand especially the younger people on here who know Mike from The Hangover, of what a truly Larger than Life figure Iron Mike Tyson truly was. A Cultural Icon. The Baddest Man on the Planet. :toney:toney:toney:toney:toney:toney:toney:toney

Simple question for the naysayers, if Tyson is overrated, who is Holyfield's best win? Or second best win for that matter?

Man I loved Tyson growing up... watching him dismantle guys inside a couple of rounds. Wich was a good thing because I used to watch him in the middle of the night as a young boy.
Back then you were the odd one out at the schoolyard if you hadn't seen it, or at least the recap the next day. It was a completely different time, when the HW championship was the event of the weekend worldwide and the main topic the next monday at work or at school. Even my granny who wasn't into any type of sport at all knew who he was and every result.

Of course he was overrated, but not as much as some claim.
It has to do with zeitgeist, opposition and the manner he disposed of his opponents wich got him the label to be unbeatable.
His fame was what encouraged me to train hard to be famous one day myself (needless to say that didn't work out).

No matter how he ended up with his life choices and looking like cr*p in his last couple of fights, he was the last real king of boxing.

Great summation... I didn't realize he had bpd, but that sort of makes sense. You could see the terror in a lot of fighters entire demeanor, before the buster Douglas fight, and even after.

i read an article earlier today on a summary of our love hate relationship with him, that was brilliant, dark, yet beautiful... You may wanna read it cst, think you may like it.

that's why i asked best or second best, Tyson is Holyfields top 2 wins.

on a seperate note, do you really feel Bowe was a better scalp than Tyson?

Holyfield himself always refers to Tyson as his main rival

Man, great OP, sums up my own feelings about Tyson exactly. I was also a kid during Tyson's heyday, and can verify what everone else here has said about how Tyson fights were true events. I Idolized Tyson as a kid, cheered for him during his prime, pulled for his rebound after losing to Douglas, and waited patiently for him to get out of prison after the bogus **** conviction. As Tyson's inner demons took over his outer form, I stopped cheering for him and watched in disgust as he made himself into a living freak show, but always hoped he would one day redeem himself. Although I was rooting for Lewis when Tyson fought him, I was still sad watching Tyson get picked apart and then knocked out, as I knew that it signaled the end of an era.
