the Brit need for a HW world champion knew no bounds, Mills was being sold as a HW hopefull as early as 1940 and actually challenged Louis in 1944, Freddie at least was a proper L-HW cum HW where as Cockell was not!!!

Woodcock was the real article with a punchers chance and in between Mills & Woodcock were Johnny Williams (really a L-HW), & Jack Gardner who wasn't really good enough.

so by the time the promising Cockell came to the fore "the push" was just as great as it was with Mills & Woodcock... Don was a L-HW and should have remained there - a bridge too far was Marciano for the tubby (Glandular decease) Don Cockell - not Cockells fault but the DESPERATE BRITISH FIGHT FRATUNITY for a HW champion of the world!

the common denominator who exploited these lads, Jack Solomons & TED BROADRIBB - bad unscrupulous ******* was old Ted!

 

Am actually related (don't ask me how) to Don somewhere down the line. Took an interest a few years back and read and watched what I could. Brave fighter who generally punched above his weight for most of his career.

 

Fights like Marciano -Cockel are measured by how long the man lasted but they were one-sided beat-downs...other than the flash KD in the 2nd rd. Marciano-Moore was a devastating whopping that Archie was on the receiving end of.

 

In my opinion the worst sustained one sided battering in history outside of Dempsey-Willard and also the biggest show of gameness in history outside of Dempsey-Willard as well that was one hell of a hiding Don absorbed yeah did here he caught a bad one in the throat - plus Freddie Mills was not more of a ighr heavy cum heavy - he was tiny - Cockell physical measurements at least were we're not a mile away from Mike Tyson's overall for instance - not saying he was genuine heavyweight far from it but you get mg point - Freddie never approached that size

 

different builds altogether, Mills was a genuiene L-HW, and a more easy transition to HW than you're suggesting, 5' 10" or so, and often walking about at 14 stone, Mills was bigger than you think and strong as hell on top of it.

I wauld have favoured Mills over Cockell in a fight simply because of his durabilty and strength... Mills had upperbody strength, where as Cockell as a L-HW had bigger legs and lower body mass. Cockell had a great build before the weight gain, but Mills was a little bigger naturally with a different build!

 

It was savage.

 

Perhaps Marciano did not punch as hard as weavers of fable would have us believe.
